If countries like Egypt Ireland and Sudan swallowed there pride and re-joined the Commonwealth we would have much more power.

IIRC there is over several dozn nations that abandon the Commonwealth over the years.

Hey mate, at the Commonwealth Games we play all kinds and varieties of sport and we are so progressive we even allow disabled athletes to compete with us.

The Commonwealth games attract the top athletes of all the member nations of the Commonwealth, and is the third greatest sporting event behind the Olympics and World cup.

Australia is expected to dominate with a massive haul of over 100 medals.

On the opening ceremony, it was pretty average and quite a poor display and representation of the great city of Melbourne.

On a lighter note the highlight was when the almighty Queen officially declared the Games open.

I should be heading to the Boxing, rugby, Athletics and weightlifting at the games.

How fitting is it that the Sporting Capital of the world is holding such a great Sporting event like the Commonwealth games.

America doesn't get to play because that would be stupid (fight for freedom and then become a member of the commonwealth?).

Its taking over channel 6 for me. The last thing that I saw was the queen giving part of the opening ceremony.

    Hey mate.

America can join the Commonwealth if they want to, it aint an exclusive club.

In fact even former Portuguese colonies like Mozambique have joined the Commonwealth, and they have had nothing to do with the British Empire.

Anyway the Commonwealth is basically a combination of the countries representing the 2nd coming of the British Empire not the 1st coming that the US was apart of.

Hell if you want to get technical you could ask why France isn’t apart of the Commonwealth seeing that Normandy was once ruled by Britain in the middle ages.

You do not have to forgo any freedoms to join the Commonwealth it is not a political union of any sort, and does not allow the United Kingdom to exercise any power over the affairs of the organisation's other members.

I would be a little apprehensive of the US joining, you know the whole them being a 'hyper power' and us being a union of 'middle powers'. It would also stop Australia from dominating the games we would proably have to play second fiddle to the US.

Yeah i live in australia and i'm really not that excited about it. Not that i don't like sport i'm hanging out for the world cup in june!!
Really it might have something to do with it being a media stunt by the monarch trying to improve their falling reputation. It's been happening for years and soon enough Australia will become a republic. But this ain't about politics and besides i think athletics and most of these sports have become all about winning and not the competing and bringing together of nations. No offence but i think it is exemplified in the "over-the-top" "show pony" american sprinters (let's be honest they take a 100m race a little too serious)

Thank god Ireland and America don't play.

No need to take the CG so bloody seriously it's just sport for God's sake! why do people have to make everything political? It's a good event that brings people and money to places that don't normally get alot of tourist activity (Melbourne obviously not the case) Let them have their fun.

Hey, who said Meander still attends school.

But yeah the state government has given us our holidays early so we can all attend the games.

Best part is we get a huge long weekend holiday come Easter time, so all in all we are getting more holidays this year.

By the way for those that are interested here is the medal table after Day 1 :

    Code:
             G S B
    AUS	3	4	4
    SCO	2	0	1
    ENG	1	3	2
    IND	1	0	0
    NZL	1	0	0
    RSA	1	0	0
    CAN	0	2	1
    WAL	0	0	1
I should be attending the rugby tommorow and being the huge rugby fan I am I expect to have a great time.

Surely you couldn't of liked the opening ceremony Meander?

I mean all those arty farty people dressed up in clown costumes and those raggedy koala suits flying in a massive thong of all things was just terrible.

What a shameful way to represent our city in my opinion.

But I am sure it was great seeing it live.

I liked the opening cermony, actually. Wasn't as cool as the Sydney one, though. I loved the bit with the trial bikes and the ballerinas, actually. Call me weird if you want - it is true.

Yeah i awsn't a fan of the opening ceremony (serious;y who organises those things). But the early holidays waorks for me but now there is nothing but crap on tv. It's seems there is going to be alot of RTW being played in the next 2 weeks. And to menander i think we have 16 week term just quietly.

It's hard enough for me to remember my own opinions without remembering my reasons for them.
