Default Offtopic - History of Carthage

One of the best thing in this mod (and in my other favorite, RTR) that the historical background of the factions and units is thoroughly researched to make the game more realistic.

Well I'm doing some historical research atm about Carthage, and I'd like to ask the devs (and any history fan players) for a little help: I need sources about Carthage's military structure, wars, units, etc.

I'm looking for detailed, heavy books, preferably to download or to read online. Unfortunately, books about the Punic wars are usually too Roman-centered.

I'm counting on you guys, the information in the unit cards must have come from somewhere.

The place to start would be the preview if there was one..... They usually cite all the sources.

Edited: Carthage never got a full preview - just a mini-preview with no sources......

You will fins that many sources are not availble on-line or are they going to be free.

If you're looking for a solid account of Punic history, I would recommend Dexter Hoyos' The Carthaginians. He also gives a good analysis of the Barcids in Hannibal's Dynasty, though there's plenty of room for disagreement.

You can try looking up Sabatino Moscati's World of the Phoenicians at a local or university library. The Life and Death of Carthage, by Gilbert and Colette Picard, is also worth a look if you can find it.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Richard Miles' Carthage Must Be Destroyed here in the States.

I would not recommend the Osprey title on the Carthaginian Wars. The only plate they have of Punic soldiers (here on the cover of Hannibal's War) is based almost entirely on conjecture (the lamellar horse armor and the helmets have no historical basis, at least in connection with Carthage). The discussion of Punic military organization is equally weak. You're better off reading the intro of Adrian Goldsworthy's Fall of Carthage or the aforementioned Hannibal's War by J. F. Lazenby.

Osprey's recent publication, Carthaginian Warrior, is slightly better, but the author fails to offer any new information or even explain the arms and armaments depicted in the illustrations.

I'd be more than happy to share some of my research if any of guys are interested. It'll take some time to assemble, however.

Thanks, I'll check those out, at least at Google Books.

My copy of Richard Miles's book 'Carthage Must Be Destroyed' is in the mail.
