    Icon5 New To Modding...

Hey, I'm new to modding but would like to try some things so if any one can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

    First Question!

I've read on the boards that Carthage (because of their mercenary history) can recruit elite units from conquered cities such as Rome.

How would I go about unlocking this brilliant bonus for other factions?

Are these troops are trained in the ''mercenary recruitment'' building in a settlement or are they hired like in good ol' vanilla when your general is out of a settlement and you can instantly get mercs for cash???

If it's the former, you'll have to be very careful as to what you mod. There is a hard-coded (unavoidable) limit on the number of unit types a faction can train in a particular city and this number is 32. The RS team warned fellow modders that certain cities are very close to this limit, and the result of going over the limit is a CTD (crash to desktop).

If it's the latter, then it is far easier to mod. Locate C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War then go into the folder of the faction you want to mod e.g. Play_One_Turn. Next navigate to data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign and open up descr_mercenaries.txt. Any unit listed as a mercenary in the export_descr_unit.text file in the data folder can be hired as a mercenary on the campaign map.

Fortunately, the mercenary text file is fairly self-explanatory when it comes to modding... Which is handy just make sure that you create a back-up of any file before you edit it! And double-check that you've made no typos etc. when modding.

Another cool feature, is that with the ALEX.exe (running RS as an AlexanderTW mod) you can make mercenaries appear for certain factions and not others. Check the mercenary text file in the Alexander folder for hints as to how to do this.

If you want to add units into the mercenary text file that aren't already mercenaries then there's a little bit of extra work to be done... But I'm not sure which units you want to add though! If they aren't already mercenary units, then just ask and I can show you how to edit that

Cheers for replying. I was actually thinking of being able to recruit Roman troops in Rome even though i'm playing as the galaecci.
