    Icon5 PC won't boot

I'm having trouble with my PC - it's a Packard Bell (no smart-arse comments please) iXtreme Y8520 that won't boot. The only thing that works is the power button at the front that lights up. Nothing else seems to function properly. The fans on the mobo and g/card spin momentarily but then stop, no beeping, no sound, no video, no nothin'!

Any ideas? I'm thinking it could be the PSU or motherboard itself, but I'm not sure.

Have you made any changes to the system recently? Have you checked the power cables? Have you added any new hardware - like a new GPU? This really sounds to me like a power problem. Fans that momentarily spin up then drop out means something isn't kosher either with the PSU or the MOBO in my experience.

How long have you had it and is it still under warranty?

I'd put money on the PSU mate.

[rage=nuclearpowered] HP's have crappy PSU's and crappy motherboards (and crappy RAM, and crappy GPU's, and crappy, ODD's, and... )

The motherboard may be failing to POST (or some other motherboard issue) or the PSU may be failing to power the system properly, however I'ma put my money on the motherboard the way it sounds. Unfortunately since HP only uses crappy components it's hard to suspect the least crappy piece of hardware as being faulty as it's all just one big pile of crap stuffed inside a halfway decent looking case.

My first PC was an HP BTW. Damn that thing was a piece of crap... oh and don't even get me started on their crappy tech support that tried to swindle me out of $100 on a PC that was 1 single day out of warranty to fix a fatal error message that they no doubt programmed in the piece of crap... couldn't ever get the system to enter sleep mode reliably nor could I get any screensaver to work on their crappidy crap crappidy!!!

Dealing with that HPiece of crap is what gave me the motivation to learn how to build PC's, thank you HP for that! [/rage]

Sooo, taking a wild stab in the dark, it wasn't a happy experience then?

I had an HP - it was shite too, actually, we had 2 come to think of it, they were both shite - which begs the question why did I buy two of them? - I blame my wife, not sure how it's her problem but I'm the techie so obviously not my fault and she doesn't read this so I can blame her

Ok ill tell you what to do: if you have warranty just go and get a new one. if you have no warranty get a leaf-blower pop the computer open (should have 4 screws on the back or on the side) and clean all the dust out. preferably outside. did it for my friend he had the same problem there was dust balls in his fans the size of an orange and hes computer overheated. when you open it out check that all the cables are snug and secure just don't pull anything out and remember that not everything needs to be connected somewhere some cables just don't belong anywhere. so yeah open the computer, get a leaf blower and clean all the dust. a hair fan would work too just need to make sure its strong enough and that it has a cool/room temperature heat setting. also you want to do it outside on a balcony or near big window as otherwise everything will be covered in dust.

I've found out it's covered under insurance to be repaired so it should be alright, will be collected by courier tomorrow. I think it's either mobo or PSU but I suppose I'll have to wait until they let me know what the problem is. Thanks for the replies!
