    Default Formation Movement

How do you keep your formation when you move your units? When I press ctrl+a and I right-click an area, they all become slanted towards the left and mixed together. When I right-click and drag an area, they don't come out in formation but rather as one big line.

holy hell lol are u serious.

you can drag the mouse to see where each "GROUP" of unit will be.

just drag a bunch of men that you want to be in a certain formation and then press g.

it will stay that way until you ungroup them.

I think what you are asking is how you keep your army's formation (relative place of each unit within the formation) the same during a move. You are currently selecting them all and then Right-clicking on a destination. Every unit tries to get to that exact same point and you end up with a jumbled mass of mixed up units, right?

Solution: Select all units and then ALT-RIGHT-click the destination (hold down the ALT key while RIGHT-clicking the destination). Your army units will all go at their own speed, and it will look like a mess for a bit, but at the destination they will all sort out into exactly the same relative formation, facing the exact same way, as when they started. (Assuming, of course, no obstacles like rocks, trees and out-of-bounds lines in the new location.)

In order to -NOT- get engaged with the enemy while your army is in that enroute-we-are-all-in-a-jumble stage, make the moves short enough that there is no way the enemy can reach you before the SLOWEST unit gets to its position at the new location.

Once you get to your new location, you can tweak the way your army faces by selecting them all and holding down the "<" and ">" keys to swing the entire formation to face more left or right. Again, this will keep the same relative location of each unit within the larger army formation.

    Hope that helped.

NobleNick, good reply, very useful tip.

I got a similar question. How about when you have a group selected and you hit the Ctrl key. The mouse icon changes into something I haven't seen before...can you shed any light? Thanks.
