    Default Summer cpu fan/video upgrade

Posted it on wrong forum before but anyways I am saving some extra money from my next 2 paychecks to upgrade my pc to get it ready for the fall games like bf3 and ro2. My specs are in my sig.

First I want to upgrade my cpu fan since stock is kinda crappy for overclocking i dont way to spend to much $55 at most on this and I found these 2 which one would be better?

    or

Another thing i want to upgrade is my video I have a 5770 right now and its good except for drivers but wanted something future proof and powerful without spending all my savings. My budget on this is about $260 so the two cards in question is ati 6950 or the nvidia 560. I not really a fan boy of either because ive had good and bad cards of both.

FRIO is the far better cooler, between those to but if your not overclocking to extremes then

    +

    2x
    http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22034

will beat the Xigmatek and rival the TT FRIO for less

as for gpu 6950 2gb has an edge on the 560Ti but if your looking at 1gb versions of the 6950 or 560Ti get the 560Ti

So are you saying get the cooler master you posted and 2 of the $7 fans? and how hard is it to install?

Also whats wrong with the 1gb 6950 i thought it had nearly identical performance to the 2gb version.
So out of these 2 the 560ti is better?

and would this be worth the extra money? or should i just wait until they restock on the 6950 2gb models that cost $260

gigabyte 6950 is slightly better but thats only without rebate with rebate the 560 Ti is the better deal i prefer the 2gb cards as Shogun II dosent like 1gb gpus with DX11 effects etc.

but if you can wait id wait for the cheap 2gb 6950 its same price as the others and you get a vram bump

Looking good. The 2gb 6950 has a small edge over the 560 Ti. Around 5%-10%, depending on the title, but a larger edge when you go to higher resolutions. 6950 uses less power too.

Just installed the frio and the cpu is a whole cooler im getting 45C and the cpu is currently overclocked to 3.2ghz and I like in Vegas so its very hot here 108F today outside so 45C is pretty good. I tried overclocking to 3.4ghz and my pc would not boot up at all, i reset the cpu and then it booted up but my video card(5770) was not working properly and when i tried reinstalling the drivers but it kept failing. Not sure whats wrong with it might have to rma it. For now i just put in my 9800gt which always works fine. Im a little mad that my 5770 might be messed up but atleast im getting the 6950 next week.

I just got the 6950 today I got the r6950 since for some reason all my cards have been msi recently but anyways I am having trouble installing the latest drivers it fails each time. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling. The drivers on the disc work fine. The only thing i hate about amd/ati is drivers and again they are troubling me Any suggestions?

Don't use the drivers on the disc. Use the newest drivers from the amd website. Download newest drivers and place somewhere you can find them easily. Install driver sweeper then uninstall drivers via control panel. Restart and boot up into safe mode. Run driver sweeper and clean out the AMD display drivers. Reboot install the new drivers.

While this doesn't eliminate all problems you can possibly encounter with drivers in general it'll help eliminate any other problems.

If you came from nvidia remove their drivers through control panel and through driver sweeper as well. You don't want any existing display drivers from either AMD or Nvidia

Driver Sweeper isnt fixing the problem.. The problem has been happening ever since I reset my motherboard(overclocked too fast and had to) alot of the drivers got uninstalled and most reinstalled fine and everything else went back to normal but my 5770 and 6950 have been having problems with installing drivers. My nvidia card updates fine(8800gt) but anyways Im not even getting the boot up screen when I f8 on startup. So im gonna try Windows 7 repair see if that fixes the problem. Is that a good idea or should I force safe mode and then try the driver sweeper thing again?

try forcing safe mode.. and dont run driver sweeper while you're not in safe mode. Could remove something that you need and may require a complete OS reinstallation. type msconfig into the search bar in the start menu and force a safe mode boot in there. Run driver sweeper.. itll ask you to reboot, dont do that yet. Go to msconfig again remove safe boot and restart. Install new drives..

What were you overclocking btw? Just the CPU??

It didnt fix the problem and yea I was overclocking the cpu from 3.2ghz to 3.4 but I guess I made to much of a jump from 3.2 to 3.4. My pc wouldnt start up so I reset the motherboard and then got everything to normal again except for the Ati drivers which have been a bother. I got my cpu back to 3.2ghz and its getting about 38C.

before you suspect the hardware as the problem you could try to reinstall the OS. If you don't want to do that try reseating the GPU as well as seeing if there is any noticeable damage in the PCI-E slot. If the doesn't work put your GPU in a friends computer to see if it runs

Also when you install the ATI drivers do you get some kind of error message?

I tried my 5770 on my friends computer which was having the same problem as my 6950 and it worked fine. Im gonna try to repair os and if that doesnt work just reinstall the os altogether. I dont get an error message it just says failed for display driver after the installation is over. Fixing os is gonna be a bother but im sure this 6950 is worth it.

Which r6950 did you get, the Frozr II or III? I guess only the III can be unlocked to 6970...?

all 6950s can be unlocked to a 6970.. its just a matter of how cool they can be and if they can hold the 6970 core and memory clocks when unlocked

actually wrong many 6950s dont overclock now because the cards are not reference cards, a reference card can unlock but its not 100% and some special cards like the Twin Frozr III will

AMDs drivers are fine try using a stable driver

its also well known that having Nvidia drivers on a PC and then switching to AMD can have extreme performance issues usually because it s up visual C++ and various other install packages.

also make sure your getting the right driver for your operating system

look for the 11.4 or 11.5 drivers for your OS then download the newest CAP or Catalyst Application Profile
    Catalyst Application Profile
    http://www.rage3d.com/cap/

this isnt rocket science the 11.6 drivers dont do anything more then the 11.5 hotfix drivers all 11.6 did was allow the new AMD APU's to function properly
