Anatolia looks nice- quick question- are you using real world heights here?

@Giorgios - I'm using this program. Were you thinking the heights look too distorted?

I was. Personal preference, but to me, real world height maps just look crap- they're far too lumpy and bumpy, and feature massive cliffs that actually hides cities from view. But your's is very WIP, so I'm sure it'll look great once done.

Today I hope to finish out most of the Middle East, which will bring me close to being almost done with the initial map (Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you, North Africa!) Middle Eastern geography is definitely not one of my strongest points so I'll go ahead and post my preliminary list in case anyone finds some major flaws in it. I'll be back later this afternoon to check and see what you guys think!

    Kutaisi, Imereti
    Tiflis, Kartli (T'pilisi)
    Shamaxi, Shirvan
    Ani, Hayastan
    Van, ? (Azerbaycan perhaps?)
    al-Mawsil, al-Jazira
    Ardabil, ?
    Hamadan, Hamadan
    Ahvaz, Khuzestan
Bagdad, ? (Can't find the Arabic name for Lower Mesopotamia)
    Dimashq, ash-Sham
    al-Quds, Filastin
    Tarabulus, Tarabulus
    Akka, al-Jaleel

@blur1811 - did you still have suggestions for Hungary?

And one more for you guys tonight!

    Egypt and Sinai

Tomorrow I'll start all those coastal cities in North Africa. Just so everyone knows, I have 18 regions left. I have 6-7 more to put in Europe (Romania, the Baltics, one more in HRE), so that leaves 11-12 for N. Africa without any deletions. I'm thinking I'll just combine "Arabia" and "Sahara" into one, inaccessible region, so that's 10-11 coastal cities.

If that's too many, I can obviously add 1-2 more regions where necessary, but I think 10-11 is pretty good. The Regions and Provinces mod uses 7, the HRSM project uses 13, so something right in the middle seems good right? Must-includes are Barca, Tripoli (Libya), Tunis, Algiers, Oran, Fez, and Marrakesh, so I need 2-3 more suggestions pretty please

EDIT: Damn, I forgot Finland. (Sorry Suomi!) So, uh, 1 Finnish region = 7-8 more in Europe, so 9-10 cities in N. Africa, so 1-2 suggestions. Gotta love the math!

I would suggest Mahdia in tunisia as it was the capitol of the Zirid Dynasty and Sijilmasa east of Marakesh an important city to the Almoravids. That should be it for the west coast of africa as other cities are too far south.

I think Mesopotamia in particular is rather too denuded of cities- there should be a couple more here and in the Levant, areas that were far more prosperous than Western Europe. As I said earlier in the thread, I'd remove four or five settlements from the British Isles, and use the slots in the Islamic world.

I'll look into it. I'm definitely in agreement about Ireland now, its too crowded. That's two more regions, which I'm thinking I can turn into Kirkuk and Ar-Raqqah. Maybe one more Persian city also?

I'd say another Syrian city might be better than another Persian one- perhaps Homs or Hamah?

Some suggestions for eastern europe. Either Galich or Vladamir, not sure which was more prominent at the time. Both if there is room. Bulgar in the far north east.

I ended up going with Peremyshl instead of Galich because Peremyshl had its own principality at the time while Galich did not. Vladimir is in right now, but it may lose its place to Turov. Bolgar is definitely in.

Oh yes. It's time. I give you: North Africa!

    Cyrenaica

Tripolitania (which, by the way, really Tripoli and Tripolitania is the same in Arabic? Having two cities AND two regions named Tarabulus seems excessive)

Ok, so, I know someone earlier said that Sijilmasa would be a good addition to N. Africa, which I totally agree with, but the thing is, its so far away from all the coastal cities in the middle of nowhere that I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to give it a separate region. So right now I've left it the designated settlement of the Terra Nullius/Sahara region. If the whole lot of you complain loud enough (haha), I'll give it its own region.

ANYWAY, with that, I'm seriously almost done with the map! It's so exciting. With any luck at all I might (MIGHT) have a playable bare bones map ready by the weekend. But until then, keep the comments/complaints/suggestions/criticisms/attention coming!
