    The Goal:
Now that I have the new map up and running, it is time to turn our attention to units, unit recruitment, local flavor, and scripting. Each faction will receive an overhauled unit roster, through a combination of borrowing from other excellent mods like Rusichi and BC, as well as original units created by members of the team. The unit recruitment system will be streamlined and rely on characters and other building trees in order to occur. Scripting will be the last, and most time consuming, aspect of the mod, but it will add a great deal of realism, challenge, and immersion to our finished product.

Good luck with your project mate! I would suggest adding more then one city in Denmark though. Ribe, Aarhus (Which you already have, it looks like) and I would also add Roskilde. In Norway, depending on how many you wanted your settlements could be Oslo, Nidaros, Trondheim, and Stafangr. In Sweden, your cities could be Uppsala, Visby, Kalmar, and Goteborg.

Many thanks, you two. Heathen_Storm, would you say the four most important Danish settlements at this time were Lund, Roskilde, Aarhus, and Ribe? I hadn't considered Ribe before, though I have been weighing Odense. And with regards to Oslo, I've found very little evidence that it was the most important settlement in the area around 1080...Tonsberg seems to be more appropriate. Nidaros and Bergen are on my list though. In Sweden, I suppose Goteborg would be in province Gotaland, and Kalmar could be Smaland? (Uppsala would probably be Svealand, just because Uppland is too narrow an area)

Honestly there are many more important then Lund in Skåne... such as Borgeby or Trelleborg. Both were Viking ring forts (known as "Trelleborgar") built by Harald Bluetooth 100 years before the start of the game... but they were far more important obviously, being fortresses, so I would recommend Borgeby. Odense was little more then a large village and continued to be to this very day. Looking around, I would say for your time period Viborg, Aalborg (called Alabu at the time) and Roskilde, although if you have more room i would suggest adding Ribe and Jelling because those are two important settlements as well.

Oslo was an extremely important city during the reign of Olaf III of Norway, who was the ruler during this time. Tonsberg could be added as well as it was a very large fortification even during the Viking Age, so it could be important for the Norwegian faction as well.

Göteborg should be in the province of Västergötland. Kalmar could be in Smaland or even Östergötland if you wanted. I would also suggest adding the city of Visby, on the Island of Gotland. It was a very rich city, due to its proximity of every Baltic trade route available. Uppsala could either be Uppland or Svealand, I suppose its personal choice. Either would work excellently.

Ok so based on that, here's what I've got: (city, province)

    Denmark:

    Aarhus, Jylland (or Aalborg?)
    Ribe, Slesvig
Roskilde, Sjaelland (is there a better name for all the islands?)
    Borgeby, Skane

    Norway:
Oslo, Fold (could potentially split off Tonsberg for Vestfold)
    Bergen, Hordaland
Nidaros or Trondjeim, Troendalog (it seems to be just north of my map, but I think I can squeeze it in)
Hamarr, Heidmork (seems like I need a 4th province north of Oslo south of Trondheim)

    Sweden:
Goteborg, Vastergotland (According to this article, Goteborg was known as Loedoese in its early history)
    Kalmar, Smaland (or Ostergotland)
    Visby, Gotland
    Uppsala, Svealand
5th city in south central sweden (i.e. around or between the lakes)?
any major settlements north of uppsala to cover that extra area?

I'm trying to find Old Norse names for every city/province since the articles I've read seemed to indicate the language was still in use at the time (especially in Norway).

I would say this (with old norse)

    Denmark:

    Alabu, Nordjylland
    Ribe, Sønderjylland
    Jelling, Jylland
    Hróskilði, Sjælland
    Borgeby, Skåne

    Norway:

    Åslo, Vingulmörk
    Túnsberg, Vestfold
    Bjørgvin, Hǫrðafylke
    Niðarós, Hálogafylke
    Hamarr, Heiðmǫrk

    Sweden:
    Göteborg, Västergötland
    Kalmar, Småland
    Visby, Gutland
    Uppsala, Uppland

    There you are mate

Haha I totally understand; I want to work on this mod every free minute I have but even I hit the wall about 1 A.M.!

Anyway, while Heathen and I have been discussing Scandinavia, I've also been working on the Iberian penninsula using overlay techniques with 4 different medieval maps to create my region blueprint. Combined with some heavy duty research yesterday and this morning, I think I've got a pretty solid lineup for Iberia ready to go, I now just need to go through the tedium of finishing out the blueprint maps and then implementing it on top of my existing region map.

Here's what I have: (city, province)

    Leon, Leon
    Compostella, Galicia
    Burgos, Castille
    Coimbra, Coimbra
    Pamplona, Navarra
    Jaca, Aragon
    Barcelona, Catalunya
    Zaragoza, Zaragoza
    Valencia, Valencia
    Murcia, Murcia
    Granada, Andalucia
    Toledo, Toledo
    Badajoz, Badajoz
    Silves, Silves
    Cordoba, Cordoba
    Sevilla, Sevilla
    Mallorca, Balaeres

all names are subject to update and change, especially the southern ones since I need to change them to their Arabic forms.

Also, it looks like Portugal is going to be out of this mod. The county of Portugal was firmly under the control of Alfonso VI of Leon and did not become semi-independent until 1093, much less powerful enough to warrant its consideration as a full faction until much later than that. I'm weighing a few options for replacement, one being Navarra the other being Sevilla.

The Taifa of Sevilla was the most powerful of the scattered successors to Al-Andalus and did not call up help from the Almoravids until the late 1080's-1090's. At its greatest extent just before 1080, it had absorbed numerous other Taifas including Algarve (1051), Silves (1063), Cordoba (1077), and Murcia (1078).

Navarra was the other major Christian kingdom in Spain along with Leon-Castille (what vanilla called Spain) and so would help to provide an additional counterweight against Moors in the south but I wonder if that would make northern Spain a little too crowded.

    Input anyone?

Since it is mostly a map mod, you won't make any changes to reqruitment system and unit rosters, will you? Anyways, good job.

Default Re: The Medieval World: A Kingdoms Mod

Many thanks everyone, your praise is very much appreciated. @Christonikos - As of now, correct, I will not be making any major changes to recruitment system or unit rosters other than some rebalancing based on the updated relative strengths of each faction. However, if I can get through the mapping and expand this mod into incorporating new factions as I mentioned in the OP, then yes, I will certainly look more closely at a unit update.

On that note, my request for mappers, modellers, artists, etc. is still very much alive as I continue to expand this mod. Anyone willing to help is most definitely welcome to join this mod.

which factions will be new ?
because when you use only the 16 from the original campaign, and

    Rus'
    Sweden
    an Irish nation
    another Caliphate

you would have only 22, which would allow you 9 more factions.. but
be aware, new factions need new units..

Hmm...I suppose I should get a faction list going, eh? And yeah, factions need units, which would require people, since I have no experience modding units other than their text files. I'll add a faction list to the OP.

It appears that with the temporary outage earlier this afternoon that several posts were deleted from the cache. Someone was asking me about permanent forts, which I admit I don't know the mechanics of. Would anyone care to explain?
