Default Why some religions wont eat pigs?

Muslims don't eat it and jews don't eat it...what's the reasoning behind that rule?

Pig is actually a less healthy meat to eat then, say, beef, simply because pigs eat all kinds of garbage.

In Judaism it also relates with the ceremonial cleanliness necessary to enter the "presence of God". The rule was laid out to separate Jews apart from other religions and give us identity. You can't really say pigs are clean animals.

I can't speak for Muslims, but I suspect the reasons are similar.

it's basically common sense if you are a desert living tribe (like a lot of the religious laws).

Raw or badly cooked pork is particularly dangerous to humans, and pigs, being scavangers, pick up loads of really nasty parisites eg. Trichinella spiralis, which is the cause of trichinosis in humans, tapeworm (Taenia solium) and Echinococcus granulosis, which causes tumors in the liver, lungs, and other parts of the body.

Well produced and cooked pork is fine, but in the conditions the tribes lived in at the time this was not possible

i read somewhere once long ago that this came about because people use to store pork in the same area as thier grain stores often this would cause the grains to become infected,
this caused two problems, loss of money/taxes and alot of people died from famine, so the rulers
i think it was the eygptions banned pork, same thing with christians not eating meat on friday
if you kill an animal on the sunday which was and still is the main family feast day,by friday that meat could be rotten,so christians eat fish which must be fresh,

i think saturday was pizza day.

sorry its a bit practical but there you go,

I hate how it tastes anyway.

    then again maybe they did

but i did say i read it a long time ago

as the eygyptians once ruled most of what are now non-pork eating states
it makes sense that if they banned it everyone banned it,
also pork rots much faster than any other meat in desert climates,

contrary to popular belief pigs are not dirty animals but are victim to surcumstance, chickens on the other hand are nasty but have never been the subject of religious persecution,

maybe the simplistic answer is lost in beurocracy of time,
perhaps in five thousand years time when the earth is a cold black shell someone will ask why dont we use fossil fuels whats up with that.

Hehe some friends and I once changed this Iranian guy's chicken for pork. "This chicken tastes funny".

He's far from devout, though, so he thought it was funny, too.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

It was because in those times Pork had parasites in them. So Pork was deemed bad to eat.

In Islam god (allah) had ruled it out. For the reasons mentioned above. Look into it and you'll probably find it out for Judaism too.

Yeah, pigs are more dangerous to eat then other meats. Pretty simple why he forbid it, mohammed couldnt have sick people fighting in a war for him
You have a certain mentality, a "you vs them" and i know it is hard to see, but it is only your imagination which makes up enemies everywhere. I haven't professed anything but being neutral so why Do you feel the need to defend yourself from me?. Truly What are you defending? when there is nobody attacking?

Some things Muslims can or can't eat

    1. The hadîth indicates that it is unlawful to eat carrion and blood. This is supported by a considerable amount of evidence from the Qur’ân and Sunnah. The Qur’ân makes it clear that the type of blood that is forbidden is blood that pours forth from an animal. Allah says: “Say: I find not in what is revealed to me anything forbidden for someone to eat except for carrion, blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine…” [Sûrah al-An`âm: 145]

It is a matter of consensus among scholars that the blood that pours forth from an animal when it is slaughtered is forbidden and that the blood that remains in the blood vessels of the meat is overlooked. This is because Islamic Law seeks to make things easy for the people. This is a distinction that it has over the Law of the people who had gone before, especially the Jews. Matters of purity were quite severe for them. They were not allowed to consume the blood that remained within the meat. No doubt, this was a great difficulty. Islam came to make matters easy, prohibiting only the blood that pours forth upon slaughtering the animal.

    2. The hadîth tells us that it is permissible to eat locusts. `Abd al-Allah b. Abî Awfâ relates: “I accompanied Allah’s Messenger on six or seven campaigns and on those campaigns we used to eat locusts with him.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

    3. The hadîth tells us that it is permissible to eat the dead from the animals that live in the sea.

    4. It mentions the permissibility of eating the liver and the spleen.

Notice that customary Islamic preparation for edible animals, by subjecting the animal to a slow death, produces slightly unhealthy, stress-hormone-rich meat.

Islam insists on a quick death in order not put the animal in much agony

If the blood has to be spilled, the animal must be alive while he is gutted.

I have a hindu friend who refuses to eat french fries. I ask him, why, since potato's are not meat, theyre technically a vegetable and realistically, junk food and empty calories, with salt. He says his religion forbids him to consume meat of any kind, and the french fries are fried in animal fat oil. I didn't know that...

The poor guy doesnt know what fries taste like, he doesnt know what a steak tastes like. He's never done a drug or drank anything, never smoked, never done anything remotely dangerous or against the rules.

    Religion. Hmph...
