Icon5 Regarding Nanban trade, christianity, and gunpowder

Several questions about the specifics of Nanban trade/ European trade:

    1. Does accepting trade with Europe automatically trigger the spread of christianity & gunpowder units?
    2. Can you build the Nanban trade port in any province with dock facilities?
    3. Can you prevent the spread of christianity through monks/temples and still reap the benefits of Nanban trade?
    4. Does accepting European trade inherently damage your reputation with the other factions?
    5. What is the impact of gunpowder on the naval aspects of the game?

In my current game I'm afraid of accepting the foreign trade because I'm afraid it will jeopardize my essential friendships, but I also fear that others will accept European trade and threaten my naval dominance through cannon ships.

    1) No

2)The nanban trade port is an option when you would normally upgrade to a military port

3)Yes, a high level temple in the province with the port can counter the nanban influence, a monk is even better

4)Not sure, but I don't think that accepting it has any consequences outside allowing building of the trade port

5)In terms of ships from strongest to weakest; Cannon>Matchlock>Archers=Melee(boarding focused like sengoku bune)
Archer ships can be stronger than melee ships but more often they are about equal. Cannon ships kill any thing else. It's easily possible to defeat any navy with just a single cannon ship. Matchlocks are deadly once they get into range due to moral damage, and easily beat archer and melee ships for effectiveness.

thanks! So you're saying that if another faction gets ships with cannons then they will be able to burn through my massive navy with only a few of these cannon ships... wow. Ok well I guess one strategy to counter that is to destroy the enemy cities that have that port, as they approach the tech level allowing them to field cannons.

Yes if you play out the battles yourself, or don't have cannons of your own you will most likely lose. Autoresolve on the other hand makes them only slightly strong, so if you see them it's normally better to autoresolve against them

Fortunately, or unfortunately, only drydocks or nanban quarters are able to build ships with cannons.

In one campaign as Chosokabe, the Hojo had built up a powerful navy, complete with O' Atakas, Heavy Bunes and their own Cannon Bunes. I built my own squadron with similar makeup and then went about to chase down their squadron, only to be caught by surprise when they had a second squadron of ships nearby when I had reached them. Despite being outnumbered, I went in anyway, played out the ensuing battles myself, and made great use of my cannon bunes. Fortunately the BAI sucked at using their own cannon bunes and I crossed their T, sunk one and captured the other.

My most satisfying sea battles in S2 ever.

This sounds pretty cool, but I'm hoping to avoid this scenario by destroying enemy ports before they churn out huge navies... I think the idea is to loot the city and torch the port, then move on.

That strategy isn't that great in the long term because looting causes a penalty to your honor, which will in turn reduce your diplomatic capabilities and the loyalty of your generals. You should only loot cities in this game if you are hard up for cash.

Sabotage the ports with ninjas, it's quicker.

You can convert build a nanban port then nanban quarter pump out some nanban trade ships and then convert back. You'll get the negative to diplomatic relations while christian but it then it goes back to normal when you convert back. I did this in my Mori campaign and I converted back in the 1560's. You'll want a couple temples around the nanban quarter when you convert back if you want to keep it for the economic effects. This method is of course assuming your willing to turtle for a while.
