Default Computer shuts down during certain games

My computer just shuts down during first-person shooters such as Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Arma 2. I don't know what the problem is, I used EVGA Precision to turn the fan speed to 100%, but it still shuts down. My computer specs are:
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor 3.4GHz
    4096 MB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295

The shutting down started a few months ago, but didn't happen before. Webroot Antivirus says there are no viruses on the computer unless, of course, there is a virus that it cannot identify

    whats your power supply?

also try shutting down EVGA precision and use the Nvidia control panel to up your fan speeds,

I know for a fact that Battlefield Bad Company 2 is extremely finicky about system overclocks AND software overclocking tools aka MSI afterburner / Sapphire TriXX overclocking tools just running without changing any settings causes BC2 to crash for me. turning them off = crashing stops

so get me the info on your Power Supply and try shutting down EVGA precision just to see if my hunch is right.

The power supply is 1000 Watts and I just downloaded EVGA today to see if it would help. I opened up NVIDIA control panel, but I don't see any options to change fan speed

    1000watts dosent mean to me

Diablotek makes 1050w unit that explodes if you load it over 500w so i need NAME and Line aka

Thermaltake toughpower or Coolermaster GX etc etc.

Could be too much heat being generated by the cpu?
    (check for dust)

i use EVGA Precision (stealth Mode On), no problems with o/c the gpu.

Did however one day o/c the o/c cpu to 3.5GHz, pushed BFBC2 over the edge.

lasted for 10 mins until it reset the machine due to the extra heat, still @ 180fps (dx9) cant complain.

^^^ Wondering to replace the stock fan with This

I know XMouseButtonControl Locks up BFBC2 online.

alright Kingwin rebadges other units but there not terrible lol Phenom II 965 will have a hard time overheating at stock the AMD stock copper heatpipe cooler with those BE chips is fairly decent. That said most random shut downs are heat and or power issue related.

This is the kind of situation with no definitive answer. your going to have play around with different things to see whats going on. That said again i can tell you BF BC2 is sensitive as new born baby when it comes to PC parts etc.

Id suggest going into your system bios

set your ram to DDR3 1066mhz aka 533mhz divider and set you cpu multiplier to 15x = 3000mhz im wondering if downclocking the cpu might give you stability in BC2 if it does it reduces the possible causes for the crashing.

The problem seems to have gotten worse, now the computer shuts down during most games, like Total War, the new free games on Steam, and even when my brother's friend was playing Runescape

Just a quick question - have you ever cleaned out your case? Like taken a can of compressed air or a hairdryer the to innards of the box? Some dust bunnies can get pretty large....

I had the same problem with Bad Company 2 crashing after half an hour of game time. I opened up my case and cleaned all of the dust and other out of it and replaced my old psu. It solved the problem for me so perhaps try that.

Clean out the case atleast once a month and maybe get better cooling on the cpu since stock isnt very good nowadays.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it might be your PSU causing the issues. If you have an additional PSU that can handle your parts put it in the case and see if you experience any issues. If you dont have an extra ask friends or relatives if they have a decent PSU. Or you can place your PSU in their comps and play the same games to see if the problems continue. To diagnose your problems its better to isolate each part of your computer and see if its causing the problems.

After checking your PSU try running memtest if the PSU is not causing the problems to check if your ram may be the culprit.

Download HWmonitor and post a picture of your temps.. Should've been the first thing posted in this thread.

If something is badly enough mounted, there isn't time to notice throttle, just hard shutdown.

I had the same problem and it was too much dust on the graphics card. I used EVGA as well and checked the speeds, what are yours btw? It will tell you specifically where the heat is coming from, the PSU or the Graphics. You said you clean your system out but do you take the card out or do you just blow air through?
