Shogun 2 Freezes on Splash screen

Ok, there were a few posts that seemed pretty close to this, but some have been hijacked for other problems and others were solved by solutions that didnt solve my problem, so I'm just gonna make my own post here for my specific issue.

I have a post on the Total War forums too, but no luck yet. Starting to think the mods arent even reading my post; they keep suggesting solutions I already tried and mentioned in my post.


So about a month ago, Shogun 2 stopped running. I run Windows 7 64-bit with automatic updates and windows security essentials.

I clicked Play, and for the first time ever, it gave me a completely new pop-up screen:

I have tried selecting every single one of those options and it freezes immediately on the splash/logo screen every single time (big black screen with the Shogun 2 logo)

I click Play Total War: SHOGUN 2 and I get this next pop-up I also never saw before:

I've tried running both DX9 and DX11 with the same result.

Now for the solutions I've tried:

Reinstalled the game from CD
Reinstalled the game from Backup
Updated my NVidia drivers
Updated my RealTek sound drivers
Updated my DirectX
Deleted the UserData file
Deleted file 34330
Verified my game cache
Created a new Administrator Account and ran the game with the new account
Deleted the Preferences script
Deleted everything in my Steam folder except the Steam.exe and Common folder
Tried testing other Steam games (including Empire and Napoleon, Supreme Commander 2, Fallout: New Vegas, etc.)
Ran every single option in both menus presented.

I'm running out of ideas here! I have NEVER, EVER worked so hard to make something so broken run on my damned computer!!! I'm beginning to feel like I just paid sixty bucks for the privilege of beta testing this game for a month!

Already done two of these, and I'm not messing with my motherboard drivers. I had to roll back my NVidia drivers because another one of my games wouldnt run properly on 275.33. But Shogun 2 ran perfectly fine on my existing drivers before this issue started. There have been absolutely no changes to any of my computer's drivers or settings since the last time Shogun 2 ran correctly. The only change has been Shogun 2 itself, and so far that is the only game affected by this issue (or any issue).

The game ran fine up until a month ago, then suddenly stopped. I dont think it's because of my drivers.

I'll check out sound blaster though. My stepdad is a computer tech at staples, so I'll talk to him about the motherboard drivers but as a rule, i dont screw around with those.

But I dont imagine that my drivers suddenly became hopelessly out of date on one specific day in the middle of may, in a way that would only affect one game.

how about erasing the hard drive and starting over? this game can really mess up things or can get really messed up by alot of things?

I tried that too, actually. This is a fresh copy of Windows 7. Granted I didnt reformat specifically because of Shogun 2. The day I reformat my entire computer for the sake of a total war game is the day I swallow a piece of razor wire, pull the end out of my ass and floss myself to death.

They did, yes, all of them. Still do.

i have the same problem duno wtf is going on stupid game the problem start when all this new options
appears i didnt try anything to solve it seems that none work any1 had any clue why this should be?

after few try`s i manage to make it work using Benchmark Game Settings wait till that is done then try to log again using

Hi

Im having the same problem as the OP, spent many hours searching various forums reading posts by chaps that have similar problems.

I have updated all drivers, including motherboard. I have tryed every fix i seen.

My game was working fine up to the patch then its not worked since, i had a break from the game when patch was released so only just tried it now.

All other steam games work, ETW and NTW as well.

Now it gets to the Shogun 2 splash screen then crash's.

I have reinstalled the game twice.

Right, well, it's been three days since i got any tech help on the sega forums (huge surprise. Guess once I've paid my money, i've fulfilled my purpose), so I'm gonna try removing the dvd from the equation and just downloading the game completely from Steam. maybe theres just something wrong with the dvd.

If this doesnt work, then it looks like I just bought myself a sixty dollar coaster.

I tell you this right now. After the glorious flop that was Empire, the Expansion-Pack-That-Walked-Like-A-Sequel Napoleon, and this buggy ass game right here, I'm going to think very hard before I buy another game from Creative Assembly. Fool me seven times, shame on you; fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

I got mine fixed!!!.


This is what i done.

Uninstalled the game from my pc, even backup.

Went to C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2 deleted the folder.

went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\total war shogun 2 deleted the folder.

When you uninstall a game it still leaves a few folders behind. if there is a corruption in one of them folders. it stop the game from working, so you have to make sure every trace of the game is removed from your pc. Dont worry you will not loose your avatar.

Then i used a Registary cleaner to clean my registary.

rebooted pc. then downloaded the game from steam again.

it worked

I'm sorry for reviving this old thread, but after FotS patch I had problem with splash screen crash as well. And this post helped, so maybe someone else will find it useful.

i fixed it, first thing i did was benchmark game settings. as usual it froze at splash screen. i looked at the log file and it says theres 3 pack files not reconized. i deleted them and whoop started shogun up with no problems

THANK GOD!!! Well, thank me, cuz it was my idea, but still, EXPRESSION OF INCREDIBLE RELIEF!!! I completely uninstalled everything, went into all my folders and deleted EVERYTHING that had ANYTHING to do with the game, and then I spent the whole damn night downloading the entire game from Steam, and now it works!

Thanks to you guys, and a great big handful of ass to the tech support team at Sega for doing exactly dick all to help me >.<

i've read about the "pirated" message before. it usually gets solved by temporarily disabling any firewall / AV solution you have that might block the game, or its protection component to communicate between each other or/and with the servers. also, unfortunately, you might need to recheck the game package.

shogun 2 currently works every single time now. after i reset steam i never got another pirated msg. apparently shogun 2 doesn't like to work with any leftover files. hope this helps anyone. this game is awesome
