    Default LOL at Hungary

I've had a game-long alliance with Hungary as the Byzantines, although I've made sure not to marry any of their princesses. I sold them Iconium for around 20,000 florins about 100 turns ago in order to prevent it from falling into Turkish hands. I was sitting on a lot of cash, so I decided to offer Hungary 65,000 florins to buy it back (it generates about 6K a turn). They countered, saying they want a 30,000 florin tribute for 3 turns. I accepted and that same turn I cancelled the tribute Our relationship went from poor to very poor, but they didn't break our alliance or our military agreement. Next turn it was bumped back to poor and it's like it never happened. My reputation sits at untrustworthy, but they're very untrustworthy

It hurts your reputation but a. it's hilarious and b. I've sorta been meaning to start a war with Hungary for a while, so I was trying to upset them, but I don't want to lose my alliance with His Holiness back in Rome. I really thought it would provoke Hungary to attack me right away, as they're far and away the top faction.

You're Orthodox. Why do you care about the Pope?

I have peaceful borders with Genoa, Crusader States, Hungary and the Papal States...keeping an alliance with the Pope makes them easier to maintain. If I go to war with Hungary I don't want Genoa to attack Nicaea or Ankara in Anatolia, the Pope to invade Sicily or the Crusader States to attack my land in the Mid-East.

More lol is why dont crush the papacy. Is the main goal Rome and Constantinople. Best choice ever, full Italy, Sicily, Greece and Anatolia. Than will be just hapiness for you.

If I go to war with the Pope first then all Catholics will attack me and the Timurids just arrived. It's easier to start with Hungary from Constantinople and go west, reclaiming Greece.

Decent strategy but you should always take Rome ASAP. Especially if that is the only city the Papacy owns. Send your best full stack of men and your best general (not your faction leader) and take Rome. Make sure you bring a diplomat with you. I also recommend at least 2 good spies so you can attack on the first turn of sieging the city.

Do NOT kill any Papal armies outside of Rome itself, using the night attack feature if you must when you siege the city. Only kill armies in the city.

Once captured, immediately get peace, a full alliance with trade rights and military access both ways (you can't get trade rights or military access from them if they have no other cities). All of the large Papal armies outside of Rome will now protect you, and as long as you keep a diplomat by their armies, you can do whatever you want across all of Europe with the Pope backing you up.

    Hope this helps.

Good idea, except the Pope owns quite a bit more than Rome (pretty much the entire Tuscan peninsula, plus my faction leader (the only one who can command an attacking army because of abysmal faction zeal) just sacked Cairo and is currently marching south toward Luxor, so he won't be venturing near Rome anytime soon. It seems like war with Rome or Hungary will have to wait. I just paid Portugal 50,000 florins for a ceasefire, but I have a feeling they will soon be antsy. So hopefully my fortresses and citadel can hold the western front. Poor Genoa, whose princesses gave birth to a number of my former faction leaders, had a strong kingdom near Caffa, until Novgorod recently wiped 'em out. Aragon was the top faction about 50 turns back, but the Pope excommunicated them and England/Portugal pretty much took care of business. War with the Timurids now seems inevitable because they just took Jerusalem during a Jihad and I have a strong alliance with the Crusader States, although at least it removed Hungary from the Mid-East. Here is a current map:

You don't even have Greece? You don't deserve to call yourself Byzantine.

Not entirely. I don't have Thessalonica. Hungary beat me to the spot by one turn when we were snatching up territories and as I mentioned I've had an alliance with them all game. In fact, the deal was originally for Thessalonica but the game crashed after they agreed to sell me it to me for 65K straight-up. When I reloaded they wouldn't accept the same agreement so I negotiated a new one for Iconium, which is more valuable anyway.

Maybe, but something happened to Thessalonica. Before the game crashed I saw it was generating 3,500 florins a turn except the population is under 5,000...probably from the plague. On the other hand, Iconium has over 22K people and generates 7K a turn...which makes it my 2nd richest city.

I'm sorry to be blunt but your campaign is probably played on Easy (keeping an alliance the whole game and your relations automatically regenerate towards neutral or positive). If you had played VH you would have had to deal with constantly declining relations with everyone and if you had used Gracul's AI you wouldn't have been able to keep an alliance for so long.

In short, you chose an easy difficulty and a passive AI script so you didn't really do anything remarkable.

The better question is, who cares about someone who plays on low difficulty settings and mentally challenged AI scripts? LOL at Hungary? How about LOL at OP for not manning up and playing a challenging game.

Also, refrain from flamebaiting phrases like "Sherlock", there is a report button on this forum and I've happily noticed how well it works.

It's actually on VH campaign difficulty, BGR 4 with RR.

... what? Did you bribe them or anything? How did you keep that alliance for so long? More importantly, how did your relations improve by themselves, when on VH they're supposed to degenerate down to Abysmal by default?

    Which AI are you using?

BTW Crusades cannot be called versus Orthodox factions, this is hardcoded in M2TW but the myth somehow survives because people talk out of their arse a lot
