Oil Spill in Alaska
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4795866.stm
The biggest oil spill ever in Alaska's North Slope region.
This is why all those people claiming that oil drilling in ANWR can be done without much environmental detriment are full of crap. If they want to drill for national security/economic reasons, environment be damned, they should say so. This whole message of "modern drilling methods are so advanced that the caribou can calve in the shadows of gushers!" is totally disingenuous. Even if the drilling can be done with low impact (which is highly debatable), there are many accompanying dangers involved in handling and transporting the oil.
While we're on the subject of environmental stewardship, the internior secretary, who oversaw one of the largest eras of land giveaways to mining, oil drilling, and logging interests, has resigned amid scandal in the department (thought she says this isn't why she's retiring). The legacy of Teddy Rosevelt's vision of land management and the protection of public lands has been seriously undercut by the Bush Administration. I live in LA, and the interior department recently announced the sale of hundreds of acres of land in the nearby Angeles national forest, mostly to developers. I can pretty confidently say that the last thing LA needs is more suburban sprawl...luckily the state legislature is fighting to keep these forest lands in public hands.
EDIT: Link to article about secretary of interior retiring.

Teddy is crying in his grave, mostly because his ego is now confined underground and he can't be fighting the Spanish-American war anymore. Although I think he is my second favorite president (FDR 1, Clinton 3). I think that this is stupid. Enough sunlight falls on the desert in California (land that is not protected or used or expensive) to provide way more energy that oil from Alaska. We don't need to drill reserves, crap like this always happens.

That's a shame.
But don't blame the politician, they only do what the people want from them.
The environment of Alaska isn't going to be an issue at the next elections, but high gas prices are.
