    Default New Rig Question....

    Laughing smilies are not allowed...!

Ok seriously, i am going to be upgrading in the next few days.

My budget is allowing only for a barebones upgrade, namely RAM, new OS, MB etc.

Now the big question is if i transfer my HDD to the new pc and even though i will be installing a new OS, is there going to be away to keep all my games in their up to date state...?

I realise there will obviously be some major prep work to be done to ensure this, but the reason why im asking is that ETW, stw2 etc have huge patches combined, for a 3rd world bandwitdth user like myself.

I realise full clean installs will have to be done..... BUT

is there any way to save the patches.... and updates???..... Legally that is??

If you're putting the OS install onto that same HDD then you'll need to backup the games
onto another hard drive, shouldn't cost much at all to get one under 50GB for those games ^^

You can't select the patches individually either if you did so through steam (updates no different?),
if it was possible then there wouldn't be anything illegal about it, not even if you found another site
that allowed you to download a standalone patch installation (I've seen such things for Sims 3 whereas
you're normally supposed to do it through it's control panel, but I've not seen it done with Steam-based
    games).

EDIT: Really cheap external HDD: UK & US

    For ETW/NTW and so on.

Just copy and paste the games folders/contents over to the new HD,

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

Then fire up steam and you should be good to go.

    ------------------------

For Non steam games, you might get away with just drag and drop, like company of hero`s for example.

Others might need a reg edit or a fresh install.

DRM games well less said the better.

A Simple way for transforming reg files.

Open Regedit (Accessories, run type regedit

In Registry Editor, locate and open HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    then find and open Software...

From there just select the folder to Export.

    ^^^Example Rome TW

^^^ To install the saved Reg File, Merge the saved reg file (RomeTW), to your OS.

    System

    Processor: i7 4820K Ivy E @ 4.4Ghz (Mild OC), MB Sabertooth X79

ok so the day nears and a thought occurs:

the supplier is throwing in a Terra byte drive for me gratis, cause he is such a nice chap

So now can i simply chuck in the hard-drive into the new rig with everything in tact and follow kill zones helpful advice above...?

Also should i boot up the new rig first before installing the old drive or just go for it from the get go and let it sort itself out...?

    ...so excited......
