The symbol that lights up white on my laptop when it is on keeps flashing orange, and then turning to white, and then flashing again.
What could this mean?

Moved to the basement.
You'll have to look up the specs for your motherboard. It will tell you what the sequence of lights means as an error.

Well, I have no idea, but I know that the good boys in the Basement will need both your lappy's make and model!

So basically this is the power button light we're talking about? Seems peculiar indeed (:/
Power supply going out? If under warranty, call Dell. They can at least tell you what the lights mean.
This morning my sister's Acer laptop died suddenly & the only thing it showed when I pressed the power
button was the power LED flashing 3-5 times, no other lights were on. We later did multiple things & what
worked was pulling the battery wire out both from the laptop, mains & separating the battery & it's power
cable & putting it all together again.
I note this because of your blinking power LED, it could be a warning for this about to happen (the laptop
died while we were gaming, so not really able to pay attention to LEDs)
This is indeed the power light button.
It has been doing nothing other than flashing orange and then white once and repeating for almost a day now. It stops when I unplug the cord sometimes.

I'm not entirely sure that this is your problem but it seems that the two complaints on this board found that the battery was the culprit - as in the battery was on its last legs and was nearly dead from being charged too many times. It seems that replacing the battery resolved both issues. It also looks like running directly off the power cord solved the issue in the short term.
Maybe you've outlived the life-span of your battery and it needs to be replaced? I hope so for your sake - a battery is much less expensive than an entirely new laptop. Let us know if this helps or was a complete waste of time. Good luck!
