According to Vietnamese paper, at 6 am local time, an incident has happened at 6^oN 17.5', 109^oE 47.5' ,which in within 200 miles of Vietnamese continental shelf. Vietnamese Foreign department stated that Vietnamese employed ship, the Viking II, was operating when a Chinese ship deliberately 'cut' the sea cable after receiving warning from the Viking II. After this act, this Chinese ship was stuck. Then two Chinese marine surveillance ships and some other ships came to help her.

I have not found any outside source jet, also no video. I really hope this thread does not turn into another flame war and troll pit like the last one. So people, please restrain yourself. If you find a person from either Vietnamese side or Chinese side to be unbearable, ignore him.

Edit:I realize the thread is devoid of any points and just merely a summarize of news. So to spice thing up a little bit, I would like to argue about Chinese supposed 'genuine' wish for cooperation and peaceful development.

In this year Shangri-La Dialogue, a security forum held at Singapore, Chinese defend minister Liang Guanglie had attend to deliver a speech concerning China's efforts in the area of international security. According to Major General Luo Yuan as recited by Xinhua:

"The Chinese defense minister's attendance at the dialogue shows China's sincerity in promoting international security cooperation and increasing military transparency."

I myself, find that Chinese policy regarding to East Asia region is anything but transparency and continuous effort to promote cooperation. Before the summit, Chinese has been violating Vietnam, Philippine, Indonesia and Japan maritime line. After the summit, Chinese immediately engage in an questionable act against Vietnam. According to the Vietnamese news, coordinate of the incident, which I mention in the op, is too far south that it is undeniable that Chinese ships, possibly Chinese government, were trying to provoke Vietnam, again.

Is China a country so despicable that's it could send a top level personnel from defend ministry to promise about peace and cooperation while also provoking a neighboring country sharing the same ideology at the same time? I do not know. But if China really want to promote cooperation and mutual respect, she should stop sending wrong signals.

The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also claim territory in the South China Sea.
The area includes important shipping routes and may contain oil and gas deposits.

My friend, Im a fan of the Monroe Doctrine. The US of A worriess about A. North A, South A, Carribean A. Sure that changed in the 1940's. But that era is over. IMHO, its time to go back to the Monroe, and leave the Bush (last Bush, not the first, which i do somewhat agree with).

When a war happens again, trust me, it will be vietnam suffering the most. When you supposedly defeated all those superpowers, the population in those countries didn't suffer. It was millions of innocent viets who were killed and wounded. It was vietnamese economy being bombed back to stone ages.

Whoa, dramatic change in the tone of this thread. War clearly isn't on the table or even close to it. The above posts were not to be taken in the literal sense.

Like the Japanese islands last year, a video was released showing the Chinese boat intentionally hitting the Japanese one.

Not to mention that China's claims to the islands were based off "mysterious documents" found in the 1960's that showed a map of China with the islands as part of it . Prior to this "convenient discovery" China recognized these islands as part of Japan.

How convenient, seeing how just a few years prior to this claim, the islands were surveyed and supposedly had mineral reserves in the sea around it...

Both VN and Chinese news sources should be out of question, as both report on their government's directives. Though, obviously anyone with a brain could see how far the incidents are from Chinese shore and how ridiculous their govt's claims are.

FYI, there were ... 8 ships escorting Viking II this time (it was the very ship got harassed @31st May), but I guess Chinese using civilian ship outmaneuvered Vietnamese force. Quite clever (and under the belt) act by the Chinese IMO. Hopefully next time there will be "accident on disputed water between fishing ships, with Chinese ships rushing to the scene rescuing their drown men".
