Well its happend. China's new Aircraft Carrier will be ready soon, granted its only one carrier and isn't nearly enough to challenge the US, but the fact they have one, and plan to build more is a clear sign that there is the potential for change. China wants its military to be globally deployable by the 2020's.

That's pretty much what I said also But the fact they have it now, and are ploughing plenty of resources into Carrier development/crew training/carrier aircraft operations etc shows they are serious about it.

I have no doubt they can build carriers, but will they be able to use them? A big reason the US is able to maintain a global carrier force is because we learned the ins and outs of carrier centered fighting in the Pacific during World War 2. Outside of NATO and Japan, do any other nations actually know how to conduct serious carrier operations (through war games or real combat experience?) Those will be some mightily expensive practice platforms I guess.

Germany 1912. The German empire was not known as a naval power before that but in terms of quality it managed to produce something competitive within two decades solely by putting their mind to it. To some extent not being a traditional power in the field might actually foster innovative thinking and jump ahead in the next tech cycle because there are no entrenched doctrines and thinking involved that might hamper an entirely different approach to a certain field.

Don't know if China manages that but it is imo immensely naive to think that just because someone didn't build and use carriers 60 years ago he will face that major problems assuming he has the knowledge and organizational system base to embark in the endevour in the first place. They can copy tons of stuff, plan and test own stuff and generally have the advantage of a clean slate and don't need to worry about maintaining a huge fleet of old ships with wooden decks because of existing commitments.

I think in some defense report it was outline the Chinese short term plan is until 2050 so my overall impression is that China plays a long game of Go and not speed chess concerning establishing what they consider their rightful role in global politics. They seem to be more worried to be dragged into a mess in the near future.

pretty much. China's primary challenges are in east china sea (dispute with japan) and south china sea (dispute with a bunch of other countries). A carrier isn't necessary in either areas, subs and other big ships are enough. China's carrier might help China to be more involved in world affairs, i.e. cooperating with NATO in some future intervetions around the world (kinda like the somali priacy mission, which china is participating).

The two are aren't correlated. Besides, with the sheer over-regulation of business and the weak pose the US has when talking trade with other countries, the US clearly isn't rooting for business. (to a lesser extent, the latter has shifted somewhat since the recession)

Also, China's human rights may come to bite it in the butt later on. If things go how I think they do, China will turn from stagnating economy to collapsing country.
I don't think the Chinese realize that they can have a successful economy AND good human rights.

Unfortunately, the politicians of the west provide no inspiration to have a change in Chinese leadership.

I could go on, but just the things I listed will take about 20-30 years to accomplish at the very least. Building bases, establishing good relations and bases, building a large navy...these things take alot of time to do and no matter how much money you have they can not be done any faster.

Well, seeing how massive China's merchant fleet is, there is no better time to begin a naval tradition (this is where the roots of American naval tradition began). However, this will still take decades, and I don't think China's economy will keep pace long enough to allow its military to become well-established. Not to mention that it has a looot of technological catching up to do.

Its all a waste of American dollars anyways. You know that right? That giant military penis you need, would be better used by making a giant business penis.

The US military is more powerful than it needs to be. It's a bit of over-kill.

Social wellfare programs are a joke and are plain inefficient (especially given the generally poor quality of US government administration - DMV.... how I loathe thee.)

By 2020? That's ridiculously optimistic. Even assuming they have the ability to complete their quota to make themselves a formidable naval power in the world, I seriously doubt they will have trained skilled sailors to serve in their fleet that will put the United States to shame.

I'm not so worried about Chinese imperialism though, being far away in Canada. China only intends to replace America as the leading military and economic force in the west Pacific/east Asia. So they won't be claiming my country's beaches any time soon.

I mean that apart from China, they claim Mongolia and little bits of Japan, Russia, India, Burma, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, as well as the islands that the PRC has laid claim to.
