Default Old games on new system...

heya, i've got alot of older games like Dark Omen, Z, X-Wing, and so on, so most of you have probably heard about the issue with running old games on newer systems, preferably Windows XP.

So is there any way of making the games playable on WinXP?

Are there some kind of tools, that i could use?

    plz any1 help

Windows XP has a compatibility mode, just right click the shortcut, go to the compatibility tab, and check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and select the operating system the games are ment for.

If they are really old games, you could also use Dosbox. (Funnily enough for dos games and early windows games).

Sometimes compatibility mode is not enough, like for command and conquer original, so you will have to get a patch from the makers, if they were kind enough to make one.

I also recommend this for DOS game solutions. *(please be patient if it takes a while to have the page load)

Get dosbox... that usually works the best.

Some games, like Elder Scrolls Daggerfall, play HORRIBLY in compatability mode. They simply weren't desiged to run on a 3 ghz pc so dosbox is a must.

For the record Sam the original command and conquer and red alert have been re-released and they run great on the newest computers.

X-wing should work well on XP without any tweaks, save for the sound. WEll, id did for me.
IT also works on DOs-box, with sound, but this is rather demanding in raw CPU power...

I've tried it with the compatiblity thing several times, with several games, but it's kinda useless, because i'm runnin' a 3Ghz Pc, so....but i will try DOS Box then, thank you all for the quick reply, guys....oh, and yeah, i also remember the days back then, with C&C-lan, with my P1 133 Mhz, 16 Mb Ram, soooo much fun.

No kidding, I'd pull it out if my brother had not dropped a box on it when he was helping me move.

i suggest you get both dosbox and vdmsound. dosbox is like an emulator and frame rates fluctuate wildly sometimes. vdmsound is better for a stable framerate, but you have less control over controlling how fast or slow the prog runs

You fiddle around with dosbox till you find the right settings, cpu cycles, etc.
It took me ages to get the sound and music working for daggerfall, and when I did I realised I was bored and went out and got a girlfriend for a month, good, clean, expensive, fu...errr....misery.
