The only thing he did wrong really was infidelity, which his wife was probably complicit in to begin with, and trying to muzzle this and coach the chick; unless he wanted this to become a big deal in the first place. What I liked is that Andrew Breitbart gave his own press conference before Wiener did.

Andrew turned up to see the press conference, and the reporters there started asking him questions, and then when he answered they started saying 'we cant hear, go up to the mike!' So he did, and then it looked like he had hijacked the press conference, but Wiener wasn't there yet.

Normally I don't really care about any of this. I think that a politicians private life should be separate from their public life unless they're breaking the law beyond a misdemeanor. I, however, couldn't help but read the article on CNN.com about his wife, who turns out to be a highly respected and loved long time aid to the Clinton's. This may be part of the reason why the Dems are so mad at him.
