Questions about some DB entries

What do the following entries do?

minimum_population 1000
minimum_population_after_recruitment 0
pop_growth_for_spawn 20
recruitment_population_cost 300

I ask because I set minimum pop after recruitment to 600 but I can still recruit up to 0 and I changed the recruitment pop cost to 1200 but it's still 300 in my game.

Also I don't know what minimum population or pop growth for spawn does.
