    Default Useful Information about westeros

For those of you who have not yet read the books and would like to know some background information about westeros HBO have created a wonderful website about the characters, places and lore of westeros. You can visit the website here: http://www.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/index.html

Thats a pigging amazing map the level of detail is unreal but i feel it's almost too complicated - there is so much heraldry (some of which i'm sure is made up) that i feel the brilliance of the idea loses something in the level of detail that is presented. It's like looking at every blade of grass when you want to see how good your lawn is.

That was made by a guy at Westeros.org. And the heraldry isn't made up. About ten years ago, GRRM sat down and came up between them with about 350 noble houses of Westeros, about 3/4s of which have unique coats of arms and a good few have mottos as well, far beyond what has appeared so far in the novels. You can see them all in the 'Citadel' part of the Westeros.org website.

Hmm. I stand corrected! that is a lot of work to do without including most of it in the novels - do we know why he did it? was it so he has a framework to build on or something?

Hes just a guy who loves medieval heraldry and stuff like this so it was probably mostly just for fun

I think it was partly the idea of the Westeros.org people (who are now collaborating with GRRM on the official world book, which should be out in late 2012) as a resource they could use for their online role-playing game hosted on the site (with GRRM's approval). GRRM took the ball and ran with it. A few of the houses, mottos and arms created in that period have subsequently shown up in the novels and on the HBO TV show.

The same thing happened with the Targaryen royal lineage. Originally, Fantasy Flight asked GRRM to come up with some descriptions for the Targaryen kings for a series of portraits in The Art of Ice and Fire book, and that led to GRRM massively fleshing out the Targaryen backstory, giving each king a detailed history and making the royal lineage much richer and more interesting than the bare bones given in the appendix to the first book.

If he's anything like me, he likes creating worlds.

I've been thinking about writing a book, but ever since I can remember I've had a world created in my head and the more detail I can give it, the better.

Most writers are that way....game programmers, etc.

Much more is actually known about the world that is created that is shown.

While I thank you and give you rep for posting this I just don't like this map. I seem to not like most HBO resources about the show because they always seem, I guess, weak in terms of information and usefulness. I just get the feeling that some underpaid guy without motivation makes these descriptions without putting any effort into it. What would be best is to have a map somewhere that provides links to something like wikipedia where you actually have solid detailed explanations about places rather than these 2 sentence paragraphs HBO seems to be vomiting onto a page that show little thought.
I took a quick look at some wiki stuff in comparison to the descriptions on the map and a lot of the descriptions seem to just be a regurgitated fact or two from the wiki.
I can't figure out why i feel this random disdain for HBO.

Tell me please, where can I get information about Userper's War (i need to know which Houses were royalists and which became rebels). For example - Darry, Mouton, Goodbrook were royalists. And I need to know them all - rebels and royalists. Tnx for help!

My sister, do you still recall the blue Hasan and Khalkhin-Gol?

    As far as we know:

    Rebels
House Stark + all of the Stark bannermen
House Arryn + most of the Arryn bannermen
House Tully + roughly half of the Riverland houses
House Baratheon + some of the Stormland houses

    Royalists
House Tyrell + most of their bannermen
House Martell + most of their bannermen (reluctantly)
    House Grafton of Gulltown
House Connington of Griffin's Roost + the rest of the Stormland houses
House Darry of Darry + roughly the other half of the Riverland houses
    Most of the Crownland houses

    Neutral
    House Greyjoy
House Frey (until the end of the war, then joined the rebels)
House Lannister (until the end of the war, then joined the rebels)
