Actually if you want to read something really good read Churchill's books on WW2.

You dont need to read them in order, obviously, since you know what happens and they are written so that you can understand them each by themselves. A great read.

Your in for a great read. Virtures of War is one of the best books I've ever read. Steven Pressfield is an amazing writer. I am currently reading Gates of Fire, about Thermopolyae, it has a slow start, but I just read a chapter of the first battle, and it was brutally outstanding. I also know of two other books by Pressfield, Tides of War, and The Last Amazon (not too sure of the title of the latter, but it is something like that) I haven't read them, but based on these last two, i don't think he could go wrong.Originally Posted by JMonk
I am currently rereading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and I recommend it to you.
Geoffrey Wawro's Franco-Prussian War:

And the Austro-Prussian War, by the same man:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/052...lance&n=283155
Both great books in my opinion.
If you want to read a couple good books about war read a Rumor of War or the Things They Carried. Both excellent works on what happens in war.

Depending on what you want to 'learn', I suggest 'How Great Generals Win' by Alexander Bevin, 'Thirty Years War' by CV Wedgwood, and the 'Darkness' series by Harry Turledove. (Which IS his real name!)
I've got Gates of Fire and Tides of War by Steven Pressfield, both amazing books, my personal preference being Gates of Fire. The Battle descriptions are so enthralling and make you think you're really there. I honestly think either of them could be made into a movie.
Bernard Cornwell's "The Last Kingdom" is a good book also. About a Northumbrian kid who is captured by the Vikings, becomes loyal etc.. to them then he gets captured by the Saxons and so on. Basically a story of battles, his split loyalty. rape, pillage and plunder. I really enjoyed it although not on the level of Pressfield's books.
