    Default CTD problems

    Hi all.

Firstly, I'd like to say thanks to everyone that made the mod (although not sure whether they'll read this as I know it's primarily a russian mod). It's been great fun playing it so far, and it's clear that a great deal of very worthwhile effort has been put into it's creation.

I have however been having a lot of problems with CTDs, in spite of following the instructions on installing the mod and playing the mod to, as far as I could tell, the letter. Normally I've suffered CTDs at random points such as end of turn, post-battle, or with no obvious input of my own. These occur maybe on average about every 10 turns, making meticulous saving necessary and causing occasional annoyance with having to repeat battles. The mod is still very playable in this state however, and I've played through as Dark Elves, capturing all of Norsca, Kislev and a few other regions, and dealing with my misguided kin. I didn't bother to go all the way to Nuln as I thought this was a rather odd final objective.

My recent Khorne campaign is faring less well however. I am now getting constant CTDs, at seemingly random intervals, around turn 63. They started immediately after slaying a large Dark Elf army in the Dark Elf camp region, if this has any relevance to the CTDs. Given that I've spent a lot of time uniting Chaos, capturing Norsca, Kislev, and much of the World's Edge Mountains, it seems a huge pity that I may have to leave the campaign at this point. I've tried reloading from a turn ago, and may try from further back, but am reluctant to do so given the time this will take to do. I've followed the instructions in http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=415097, and have never had any CTD problems with Kingdoms or the Third Age mod. I tried to include the log for the last crash I encountered, but it's over 11MB. I've included a sample including the unspecified error at the end. There seem to be masses of cases where something is stated as missing, but I don't know if this is normal for the mod. I may try a campaign with a different faction to see if my game has developed a more general problem.

    Many thanks for any help!

I'm assuming that the absence of replies means that no-one has any specific suggestions? I'm currently having fun with a Wissenland campaign. 13 turns so far, and only a single crash at turn 8. I may just have to reload a few turns back in my chaos campaign and see what happens, although I tend to autoresolve very little so may take a while. So yay for the mod, boo for unspecified errors!

I'm afraid I do not. I wish I could help you, but I have no experience with scripts I'm afraid.

No worries. Cheers for taking a look, and for all the invaluable installation guides etc. Helped massively when starting off with the mod!

    Hey there,

In terms of CTDs, I think we all feel your pain. We have all been there. Now about what I know of CTDs:

    1. After battle ctds seem to be strongly related to graphics. Some units have messed up animations that cause CTDs like trolls, giants, etc. Also, ctds here can be cause by your computer specs. Try turning some details down. That help me.
    2. Campaign ctds. You will get the odd, random CTDs but 1.4.4 is very stable. However, if you are experiencing alot of ctds, it could be a variety of causes. Before anything, make a back of your COW directory. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. First, ctds can be related to the English translation. The newest translation have made some minor changes, but even these can eliminate a few CTDs. You should apply the newest translation. Second, submods can be a cause for CTDs. Try to play without any submods to see if that could be the issue. I know that the permanent arrow submod cause a lot of CTDs for me. Third, try deleting the map.rwm file each time you start a new campaign. Four, if you revise any of the ED files, one tiny mistake can cause ctds. Fifth, I know 1.4.4 fixed a lot of campaign script errors, but maybe you have uncovered a new one. Look carefully at the log - try to generate the ctd using different methods. For example, got back 5-10 turns and just quickly end turn - don't do anything else - and get to the point where you normally crash. Or turtle up and then end turn; or autowin any battles and then end turn. Try to isolate the ctd. If you are lucky you can identify the bad script and just cancel it out (putting ";" in front of that script). A consistent ctd at turn 65-75 seems to indicate a problem with chaos undivided script. Are you playing with version 1.4.4? I know that 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 had this.

    1. I have occasional after battle CTDs, but they're pretty rare generally. I may try turning down my specs nonetheless.

    2. I'm using the full english translation version of 1.4.4 from http://empiretw.ru/board/index.php?s...2&#entry527802, and applied all of the changes suggested by isilendil in http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=427349 before starting to play the mod.

I'm not currently using any submods.

I haven't revised any ED files, and will have to remember to delete the map.rwm file between campaigns in addition to the deletion I performed during installation if that assists stability.

I'll probably go back some turns in the Khorne campaign and play it out again to see what I get in the logs. My knowledge of scripts is extremely limited though, so I'm a little unsure of what might manage to find. One oddity that I noticed when I united Chaos was as follows, although dunno if this is relevant. The first turn on which I united the wastes, all my stuff went brown and gained the undivided icon, and Archaon and Crom turned up. I got the scroll telling me that the Storm of Chaos had begun. I was able to build some daemons from an additional chaos faction (iirc the Slaanesh ones), but none from the other two factions that joined my ranks, and none of the extra chosen units. The next turn I got the Storm of Chaos scroll again, and had access to all of the daemonic and chosen units I'd expect. Thereafter, each turn I've got the Storm of Chaos scroll again, and everything else has proceeeded like normal (still having access to the expected units). I get units from all chaos factions for mission rewards. As everything looked to be working ok, I didn't question this at the time, but is this behaviour unusual?

Many thanks for all of the suggestions!
