    Default keeping the PC cool

i feel like my PC is too hot. in the winter its fine but now its summer the air is jsut too hot that its sucking in. im sweating just sitting in my room. ive used catalyst control center to bump up my graphics card fan a bit and ive got the temp down from 60 to 51. thats probably jsut the graphics card though.

i know thats not crazy hot but its more than id like and last year i saw some slight artifacting and i saw some very mild again the other day. the probelm is im revising ATM and becase my stupid school picked a realy obscure history course there are no nice books on it so the PC is on 90% of the day just on the internet and word.

If you have a temperature of 51 on load, your card is just slowly dying. Temperatures are fine up to 85C on GPUs.

I've got a well ventilated computer in a rather cool room & my temps can peak at 75C despite all the
fans being as high as possible (still waiting for a 3000rpm fan to put in a external air duct). So if 51C
is your peak temperature then you should be proud

If it's idle then not so much, but shouldn't be a problem if your peak is not 80C+ (though I've had problems
with former graphics cards crashing at 70C).

EDIT: Are you able to see your peak temps then? You can try opening your case & making room for airflow, sometimes
leaving the side panel out can help in the short term especially if you have a desk fan to blow into it. If that fails
then you can start replacing your current fans with ones which have higher RPM & CFM or even get a new case with
more fans & space if you're willing to move all the components across (& do so safely, I once did this & my PSU somehow
    died..).

I always thought that a temp. of 51 degrees would be low for a card under load? Don't you mean at idle?

You didn't understand what I said. Yes, it's insanely low, I'm just saying that if the temperature is so low and the card is still getting artifacts, it's just getting old.

Oh right, I get you now!!

You didn't mention artefacts in that post.

It's 51 idle, but it dosnt go up a whole lot. Maybe I'm being paranoid but the room with it in is noticably hotter than the rest of the house after 30 mins even next to an open window

well for the purouses of science i will take some time out from revison to play left for dead and see what temp it peaks at

I have MSI afterburner show my GPU temps at the top left of the screen when I'm playing games so it would
be good if you could do that with your Catalyst control centre if you could, just incase the comp crashes &
sometimes it can cool down quickly like my comp so that when I've exited the game it's dropped nearly 20C

well it went up to 68 after 10 mins. so it probably goes higher than that. thats with the window wide open 10 cm away from it :p

68 is not too bad, would be good to see if there's possibilities of stretching that further maybe with things
like furmark or NTW on the highest graphics you're capable of on a naval battle we shouldn't aim as destroying
    your computer either

As said try & get something that will show your GPU & possibly your CPU temps during game, if it reaches
80C+ then it's cause for concern, otherwise you can relax

graphics cards are fine up to 105c

keep the max temp under 85c for best results

but thats only the gpu core. ram temps and VRM temps can cause artifacting and issues if they get to hot something people tend to forget.

if the CPU is AMD keep it under 60c
if the CPU is Intel keep it under 75c
as for the GPU keep it under 85c

There seems to be alot of misconceptions about the temperature on hardware. Sure, the cooler the better, but it it's very unlikely that the difference between 60 or 85 degrees on load will have any impact on the functional life of your graphics card. I only prefer lower temperatures because the fan i;m using now makes such a loud noise.

Well, temps on my XFX 9800GT will not make it to 85C without doing something stupid.

XFX put two temp probes on the card. If the gpu stays under 65, the vram can go to 80 before the screen darkens. It will darken if both hit 70 at the same time. I went through it all last summer.

correct but that comes back to the point i made about different components on the card hitting different temps if the OPs gpu core is fine but the memory is overheating it will artifact

and lower the better point is some gpus are rated to 105c but ive seen then DIE at 100c meaning they couldnt handle the temp they were rated for.

seen it happen to 4870x2 and 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra.

also need to remember just because the gpu core is safe to 100-105c doesnt mean the power circuitry on the PCB for the gpu or memory is they usually share a heatsink so if the gpu is getting that hot and the cooler isnt effective the heat can potentially kill other parts of the card causing issues. This situation is rare but again ive seen it a few times

but rule of thumb as posted above

keep gpu core below 85 peak
keep cpu below 60c peak for AMD
keep icpu below 75c peak for Intel

    these arent just for longevity

AMD cpus have been shown to become unstable even at stock when going above the 65c even tho there thermal throttle point is higher then that.

but yea far as i can see the temps sound fine. all things considered. as for the artifacting most like vram or vrms overheating if the gpu core isnt running that hot. could just be a defective unit or could be a borked driver. eitherway pure temp wise i dont see any issues.

Isn't the TJ Max for the cores 90c while the Max for the cpu itself is 62c? I've also read that the temperature readings for the cpu can by wonky at times and that the best way to make certain that your amd cpu is safe is to keep it under 55c.. At least that's what i've seen after researching information about overclocking my cpu.

unlocking cores throws off the temp sensors and thuban cpus can be off by nearly 15c due to the temp sensor not being calibrated properly
