Idiots, Idiots never change.
USSR, im beginner too but it has massive IC and nice armies, albeit outdated at later years.
It might be fun. Just don't know how would i stop Germany, when Operation Barbarossa starts. But it is worth a try.

I think this old thread here might hit the spot.![]()
I learned getting into the game by playing Romania.
- You are not in need of a fleet.
- You can join one faction (Russians, Germans or Allies) at almost any time of war by picking one side.
- Your country is not to big and not hard to manage.
- In war you will more likely be in a supportive role.
I joined sides with the Axis and conquered Stalingrad 1942.
I think germany might be the best starting faction, you are guided along with events and as long as you get the whole thing about building units and reaserch then you really cant loose. The first time i played i actually kept half my army on the french border from the start since i was afraid of them, and then when my delayed invasion of france started i tried to go through their defensive line![]()
As you might be able to tell, it was a disaster, but germany is so good in terms of troops and industry that any mistake you make can be fixed pretty easily. The only thing i wonder about is the navy's, i built over a dozen wolf packs over the course of my last game as germany, and i sent them all over the atlantic, but they would all sink 5 or less transports, then get sunk by a british fleet, no matter how many subs i had. Does anyone have any tips for that?

No. Submarines simply are not very good in HoI 2. They were once, I think, but that eventually changed with a patch. Now, they are hardly worth the ressources.
When you get the hang of the basics, try Belgium. It is possible to really play ahistoric since it only takes a few political moves to become part of the allies (blueprints n stuff) and get PA government. With that the Netherlands can be conquered, something that will include careful planning of beach landings in Indonesia. You can then either leave the alliance before Germany attacks Poland and enter the axis before you are attacked yourself (may 2. 1940) or reenter the allies as Germany attacks. Not getting steamrolled by the other side is now the big challenge, but I have managed to survive both scenarios.
