Windows 8 is actually based on the ZuneHD UI (released in 2009). It's funny because MS discontinued the ZuneHD due to low sales volume and they go and base their next OS on it immediately afterword. I love the ZuneHD interface though so that's cool.
I hope they release a beta for this soon. I have a spare PC that needs a free OS
Although the interface and app ideas are all good, the OS as a whole could become a massive failure if there aren't many apps released. Think of how poor the Vista and 7 "gadgets" are. It simply looks like Windows 7 with a UI overlay that looks cool but likely won't be all that practical on a desktop PC (great for tablets though).

is this some sort of version of Windows for the elderly or for the basic software impaired?
(sorry for the cheap shot, i know we have quite a few elders in this forum that i should be more respectful to!)
it looks pretty damn casual.
Looks like a massive Ram waste to me.
Microsoft stated that they won't allow any company to build a Win8 tablet unless it meets or exceeds the hardware specs that MS dictates. So we won't have to worry about a tablet that can't handle the UI.

It looks like Windows 8 development has been heavily influenced by the rise of tablets and mobile devices because for the few moments you saw the traditional Windows desktop it didn't look any different from Windows 7.
thats because the stuff you see with the tablet like interface its the new DEFAULT interface
the other GUI you saw is for us regular PC users you know ppl that like there PC to not be a tablet or a mac or a phone or an ipod lolz and it is the WIndows 7 GUI unchanged and unaltered it is the new Legacy GUI for windows 8..

Yeah I'm probably not going to be using the tablet style UI so this probably won't be a vital upgrade to me, since the normal Windows Explorer interface will probably look exactly like Win 7.

you have to remember that the windows mobile 7 interface is also based on the zune. I always wanted to get a zune HD for me, but they never sold it outside the US

it would suck on everything lol.
who are we kidding here its like the Opera browser meets Media Center for the masses. its fine for the Zune, Tablets, Touch screens but heres the problem those pos electronics are a tiny portion of the market. most ppl still use netbooks, laptops, desktops. which would all suck with that interface.... i cant even imagine trying to do 3D work in Maya across multiple screens with such an interface. If microsoft keeps up this kind of pace. i might have to make Linux my default OS and Windows my dual boot option...
hell searching throught my games that dont use steam looks like it would be a damn chore with that GUI. unless there giving me some ability to use my brain to direct the OS this interface is fail lol/

not really... literally WIndows 8 is a rehashed Windows 7 with a new UI and improvments for touch screen and well theyou see above. there small tweaks but not a huge change.
what i wonder is will Windows 8 introduce a new Direct X lol as its almost that time again.
DX9.0c had 5000 6000 7000 series from nvidia
DX10 had 8000 9000 gt 200 series
DX11 400 500 and soon to be 600 series
of we follow the above trend... it would mean that WIndows 8s actual debut on the PC platform would most likely be around the time of the nvidia 600 series refresh / 700 series meaning about that time for a new API update lolz
