IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH SOUND there are 3 ways to try to solve it:

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=450015

    this is the first one but to me it did not work and I tried 8 times;

the other way is this one:

IMPORTANT: here is alternative method of installataion in case you have problems with first method.
    Download from this link
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YQH4OM8O
    1.Unrar arhive, there you'll find "Call_of_Warhammer" folder.
2.Copy extracted "Call_of_Warhammer" folder over yours "Call_of_Warhammer" folder.
    3.Go to Call_of_Warhammer\data\sounds\ and delete or rename events.dat, events.idx, Voice.dat, Voice.idx, SFX.dat, SFX.idx. (Only 2 files should remain in this folder: music.dat and music.idx)
    4.Launch game, then exit game.
    5.If everytnig go ok in Call_of_Warhammer\data\sounds\ you'll have 6 files: events.dat,events.idx, Music.dat, Music.idx, SFX.idx, SFX.dat, Voice.dat, Voice.idx. 4 generated files(everytnigh besides music) should have 131 mb of disk space.

this one is working unfortunately if on one hand it gives sounds:voices for generals, merchants etc...
on the other hand it takes out some sounds, like all the sounds when you select a building when you open a message etc or when u press a button or any sounds of the cannons

the best solution I found was to download the torrend version and to copy the sounds folder in the folder of my mod (I am using complete 1.4.4 with music NOT TORRENT)

this way I had sounds of everything... at least almost even the cannons are making sounds when they are shooting but I do not hear anything when the cannonball touch the groung or damage a wall it is all silent, I can hear all the other sounds even the wall falling but not when the cannonball touches it

in addition there are often crashes

what should I do to haall the sounds and a stable version, I have tried all the possible combination, even using some file from med 2.

the last thing I might try is to try to use the sounds of a previous version if someone would be so kind to make them available... in any case I hope I might have helped someone

this is an extraordinary mod and I am not saying just to say it, since I have never spend so much time for the installation and sounds test for any other mod than for cow

so guys lets help each others and lets try to find a final solution for the sounds of this game

pS: I have used both winrar and 7 zip they both worked perfect to me

    Hi there Dark,

COW 1.4.4 is the most stable version I have ever seen. It's unfortunate that you have had problems. Here are some possible solutions.

BEFORE ANYTHING: MAKE A BACK OF YOUR COW DEFAULT DIRECTORY

    1. If you have a steam version, this can mess up the sound - make sure you apply the solutions suggestion in several threads. You can search for Steam install or something like that.
    2. Let's assume that everything related to Medieval II is up to date e.g., you have Kingdoms and 1.5 patch install.
    3. Install your COW version.

    Solution #1
    4. Delete entire COW/data/sound directory.
    5. Copy Galloper English sound mod in COW/data directory. In this case, you are not overwriting anything in that directory.

    Solution #2
    6. Do same as above but use another COW install. I heard that Red Dwarf's torrent version has worked for a lot of people.

    Solution #3
    7. What worked for me was to install the Russian 1.4 + 1.4 music + 1.4.1 patch + 1.4.2 patch + 1.4.3 + 1.4.4 - I only install 1.4 into default. I unzip everything else and then copy it over into the COW directory. Then I do the same thing for the English Translation. I also follow all the suggestions in the Important Info thread (a sticky on first page). I don't have any mods installed other than Rieksfart's submod.

    Hope this helps.

Although I can appreciate the time and effort put forth in this guide, I am unfortunately finding much of the information in this post extremely convoluted, misleading or entirely irrelevant.

I fail to see how the first and second sound fixes you mention have any correlation with each other, especially with one being an independent sub-mod for english voices. (The difference between these two downloads is so substantial, that you admit that it doesn't quite fix the sound problems.)

My recommendation to fix these sound problems is either to go to Toho's original sound fix or re-download and completely reinstall the mod.

As for your own personal plight, I suggest following my recommendation above. (Trust me, I think it's much saner than what your about to do. )

    @boatie and @mw2xboxplayer

thank you guys for the fast replies, I will be a bit long but it is better to be very specific in these case

first of all yes I do have a Steam version but trust me when I say that it is exactly like the CD or maybe even better since all patches are automatically installed perfectly in the right order

I am 100% sure steam is not responsible for it, when I described the sound bug the first time here Toho replied me it might have been because of steam but then speaking I discovered he had my same problem (he thought he messed up with the filbut he didn't) and then it showed up lots of people had our problems and that is why he did the sound fix for everybody

I am redownloading cow both torrent version and 1.4.4 music full mod previously
the torrent version 's sound was ok unfortunately in this version I can not make the campaign, whenever I choose a faction and I press ok I comeback to the main menu

In the 1.4.4 with music I can play but as you know there are no voices and lots of sounds are missing,
as I said before I tried many times to do as Toho says but it seems as if the game fails to repack

    Step Five
run the game and wait for the files to repack, if the game fails to repack at some point it will repack until the error point and then abandon repacking which causes people to have missing sounds. 99% of the time the repacking failure is because of descr_sounds_music because music is the first thing to be repacked and if you have made a mistake in that text file all of your remaining sounds, SFX and Voices will fail to repack and thus you get a voice.dat file with only 1 kb in it.

as explained maybe it fails to repack because I have music... in any case it is not working

so I tried the other way that is also written in Toho's original sound fix precisely in
RabidSheep Legion's method described at the end of the discussion of the same link

but even here the fesults were not amazing

the only very good sound I manage to achive is by coping the sound folder of the torrent version in the 1.4.4 unfortunately some sounds are still missing, this means, for example I cannot hear the cannon ball make any noise when they hit something like ground or a wall, it is all silent
and in addition it seems very unstable

    so what should I do??

The thing about steam is that it creates a different directory to store temporary files, including perhaps some sound files. You need to find where it is (I forgot what thread this is end) and delete this directory (I think is called virtual store, but not sure). The mix of directory could do messing up your COW install.

"I fail to see how the first and second sound fixes you mention have any correlation with each other, especially with one being an independent sub-mod for english voices. I thought that with you replacing your entire sound directory, this would resolve your problem on its own.

I know also to me it first looked strange because it is a kind of submod but as I just said if you go here

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...77#post9527777

and if instead of just reading the first post you keep reading everything you would have read this:

If you are using the full english translation download 1.4.4 this download seems to fix the music and voice problems, using the alternative method

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=414225

using this method from said thread
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This is a beta so I strongly recommend make a backup of all overwrited files.

However, when I did it, my sound effects disappeared (like clicking on the options during the menus it makes that noise) Apart from that, everyone has a voice, even during the diplomatic menus!
Don't forget to rep me if you like something I did/ or not lol

See that green thingy under the Carroburg banner? click it!

    and that is what
    RabidSheepLegion

explained in his second to last reply, he also said that some sounds disappeared to him and the same thing happened to me

so as u said this way does not work completely

if it might help you to understand my situation I installed cow in
    C/programs/steam/ steamapps/common/medieval2 total war/mods

than I have renamed the folder call_of_warhammer into americas (and alredy moved away the original americas one) and I can play

hope I have given everybody enough details

so what should I do now? can you please give me all your sounds folder, I will really appreciate it

i really dont understand what you are trying to achieve here. numerous people have used this technique and have successfully fixed their issue.
you must also understand some of the sounds were removed from CoW intentionally though the reason eludes me. so if you do not hear the torch burning sound or cannon balls hitting the ground or etc is because they were intentionally removed.

also in some of your steps you say there is no need to delete the music .dat and .idx not deleting those causes more problems than it solves. when you use the extractor to extract the files into folders containing the sound files you must put them right beside the .dat and .idx files of their respective packed files(as shown in the screen shot).
when repacking the game first looks events, the events is like some sort of a menu that looks at each text file associated with Voice, SFX and Music if everything is ok; meaning the text file corresponds with the files you extracted then it will repack everything successfully. if not then you will have either missing music(like the English voice mod) or missing SFX and Voices.

in all honestly your tutorial is really confusing i dont understand what is going on half the time but if it worked out for you then congrats
