    Default GTS8800 HEAT issues

    Hi guys,
I am wondering about what to do about heat issues with my gpu. I currently have a fan blowing on the gpu and use riva tuner and gpz to monitor temps etc.

The card 8800gts however can reach 80 degrees when I have 3-4 k on the battle field (the Mongol Invasion) and set to low - medium graphics ingame settings playing MTWII.

I'll be honest I haven't updated the drivers and need some advice on this. I read various articles saying you have to reboot in safe mode after removing the drivers... etc.. this seems pretty complex to me, so is it possible to just use the latest update from Nvidia and overwirte the cards drivers? I kind of don't want to have to reinstall the original drivers and feel better (safer!) keeping the 'rollback drivers' option under driver management in windows.

There was a set of drivers too that actually CREATED heat issues from Nvidia but my details are sketchy on this as I was quickly scanning through the material and didn't check the specifics.

Any advice? I really don't want to bugger my game I have everything perfectly running except the heat problem and I don't see any trade models on the Strat map...

    Thanks.

The 8800GTS was a pretty high end card when it came out so naturally it's going to run hot besides running it around 80c isn't that bad it's only once it starts to high the high 90's you need to worry.

Nvidia did make a design flaw on 8000 series cards and when I owned a 8800GT the fan wouldn't go any higher then 40% on auto so I created some fan profiles using 3rd party software to make it spin quicker when certain conditions were met. I suggest downloading MSI afterburner I pretty sure you can set fan speeds using it as well monitoring GPU usage and temperatures (in game as well) but don't ask me how it works as I've never needed to use it. I don't know if your card suffers the same problem but it might be worth looking in to, also cleaning out any dust around the heatsink and fan will have a dramatic effect on cooling as well, internal cable management and case design also has an impact.

Also try opening up a Window and decrease your room temperature if your really that bothered about it to many people just go by absolute numbers and ignore things like room temperature it's why you should only trust reviews that quote the T delta of a cards temperature (difference between core temp and room temp).

thats very normal for a 8800, like Freddie said as long as you dont enter the 90's you shouldnt need to worry

    Ok thanks guys.

It's good to hear about others experience with a similar card. I have changed the fan speed with RivaTuner which is a pretty good little program and does seem to get the heat out. It runs idle at 65-70 degrees even in excel hahha, ahh that's ok right?

I worked out that maybe before a large battle I could just up the fan speed to 100% for the duration of the battle...this would be ok wouldn't it? It wouldn't wear out the fan or anything?

Yep, I try and keep everything clean and tidy cable wise, more so now due to having to keep the side panel off the pc and have a desk fan blowing on the pc haha.

Is there anyway to fix the missing trade ships and wagons? Or is it better to leave them out anyway, as I have read a lot of issues about turn lag etc that doesn't seem to affect me, if this could be an issue with turn lag. I suppose if I update the drivers I should just follow instructions and do it the difficult way... could always make a restore point...Just haven't done this with such a full on gpu card before (At least it is for me, latest card I bought two years ago.)

Which gpu would you guys recommend for an asus p4p motherboard that could play mtw rtw on best settings and also not have problems with older games? I am not that interested in the newer TW games like Shogun2 etc

Oh and one last question, what sort of ram is best? I read a few nights ago here that more than 4gb ram isn't necessary as 32bit windows doesn't use more than that?

    Thanks again.

80 isnt that bad. 90+ is pretty hot though.

just download and install MSI afterburner its made by the creator of riva tuner works better and has simple interface look up some tutorials on how to use it just set a manual fan speed profile

aka at minimum fan speed is 20% then at say 50c you have it at 25% fan speed at 65c you have it 35% at 70c 40% at 80c 65% at 90c 100% experiment untill you find a nice noise to temp ratio.

my old 8800gt gets up to 100 even with 100% fan it was still working when I trash it. basically I could not play new games on it without random restarts due to overheating my 5830 was good. I gave it to my brother when his card died and bought a 460 1gb recently. 460 have a 100% load temp of 60 degrees you cannot beat that.

That blew me away. "Turn on the TV," he'd say. "What are you seeing? People selling their products? No. People selling the fear of you having to live without their products." freakin' A, was he right. Fear of aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of failure. Fear is the most basic emotion we have. Fear is primal. Fear sells.” WWZ
