Default Chinese prisoners forced to fam gold for World of Warcraft!

    Wow! Just... wow.

    http://beta.news.yahoo.com/blogs/tec...202425282.html

"Liu Dali spent three years in one such labor camp, and claims that after a hard day's work was completed, he and up to 300 of his fellow detainees were forced to make virtual money in online games like World of Warcraft, for the benefit of prison guards."

"He also claims that certain quotas were set, and that those who didn't raise enough virtual cash would be physically beaten."

"Chinese officials have denied the allegations, and insist that because playing an online game would constitute "contact with the outside world," prisoners would never be allowed to engage in such activity."

If that's true then it's ... well, I don't know what it is. Bad certainly because the prisoners were prisoners on forced labor camps that had to work long and hard so they needed their rest.

On the other hand, it's a bit too far fetched. I'm not saying it's not true, I'm just skeptical.

You know, they didn't do it for leisure. After a day of digging and carrying heavy load, they were forced to farm gold for their prison guards to sell (illegally).
According to that person, if they didn't reach a quota, they were beaten up. So with their eyes drooping and their backs hurting, they had to do nothing but farm gold, not enjoy the game.

If they were given the chance to spend a day farming gold instead of carrying rocks then it would be OK. But they were forced to do that ON TOP of their forced labor.

Both male and female walruses have tusks and have been observed using these overgrown teeth to help pull themselves out of the water.

The mustached and long-tusked walrus is most often found near the Arctic Circle, lying on the ice with hundreds of companions. These marine mammals are extremely sociable, prone to loudly bellowing and snorting at one another, but are aggressive during mating season. With wrinkled brown and pink hides, walruses are distinguished by their long white tusks, grizzly whiskers, flat flipper, and bodies full of blubber.
Walruses use their iconic long tusks for a variety of reasons, each of which makes their lives in the Arctic a bit easier. They use them to haul their enormous bodies out of frigid waters, thus their "tooth-walking" label, and to break breathing holes into ice from below. Their tusks, which are found on both males and females, can extend to about three feet (one meter), and are, in fact, large canine teeth, which grow throughout their lives. Male walruses, or bulls, also employ their tusks aggressively to maintain territory and, during mating season, to protect their harems of females, or cows.
The walrus' other characteristic features are equally useful. As their favorite meals, particularly shellfish, are found near the dark ocean floor, walruses use their extremely sensitive whiskers, called mustacial vibrissae, as detection devices. Their blubbery bodies allow them to live comfortably in the Arctic region—walruses are capable of slowing their heartbeats in order to withstand the polar temperatures of the surrounding waters.
The two subspecies of walrus are divided geographically. Atlantic walruses inhabit coastal areas from northeastern Canada to Greenland, while Pacific walruses inhabit the northern seas off Russia and Alaska, migrating seasonally from their southern range in the Bering Sea—where they are found on the pack ice in winter—to the Chukchi Sea. Female Pacific walruses give birth to calves during the spring migration north.
Only Native Americans are currently allowed to hunt walruses, as the species' survival was threatened by past overhunting. Their tusks, oil, skin, and meat were so sought after in the 18th and 19th centuries that the walrus was hunted to extinction in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Eve online items (well currency) certainly does, people pay a fortune for it. Rough guesstimate based on PLEX [game time in game isk value], would be $15 for 3-400 million isk, players buy game time, convert it into an ingame item, the plex, [pilot license extention] and sell it on the ingame market, I know their are thrid party sites doing RMT as it is the frequent subject of dev blogs, that offer a cheaper but illlegal rate. Since RMT has excisted since the MUD days and in all games, those pixels have value.

I don't know about WoW but in Lineage you can just aggro train mobs, lead them to your spot and AoE spell/skill kill them. I think my record was something like 5mil adena per hour just from money drop, mats and keymats on the side. And I didn't play a dedicated AoE char.

Have you played WoW? Farming gold = staying in a place and kill kill kill respawning monsters to gather the loot.

If you ever visit China, deny it if it comes up and obey the law.

I thought prisons in China are incredibly crappy and crowded. How did they get so many computers....

but ya, China is one of the few countries in the world that still make prisoners do labor as a part of "reforming" them. (I think some prisons in the US have that as well).

I think many countries have labor. I don't know what happens in 2011 in Greece but in the 80s you were given the option to go to a labor camp, get payed a pittance, work long hours digging for roads etc and do half your sentence. I.e. if you got 20 years in prison you could do 10 in a labor prison but you would earn very little money compared to what you would earn if you worked as an employee of a construction company.

In China's case prison labor has actually declined mainly because:
    1. the prisoners make are typically worthless so prisons actually lose $ with whatever crap they try to make and sell. (except maybe Warcraft hahaha)
    2. labor doesn't actually seem to reform prisoners well. It seems like a pointless retribution against prisoners by society.

The US doesn't generally force prisoners to do labor, they let them do it in exchange for (very low) payment.

Well, last time I heard in Greece they can choose to do heavy labor for reduced sentence and some low payment. A 22 years old guy would do 5 years hard work and be out of prison in his 27 instead 32.

China deserves a prize, one of the few countries in the world that can say " you" to all the west's human rights and and the west can't do anything about it.

And you deserve a prize for contributing nothing.
"World opinion" is a cacaphony of noise, even at the government level. There is no "world opinion" of over 6 billion people. People pretend it exists to try to reinforce their own biased viewpoints. -Senno
