Default Arrgghh! Defeated! Can I still....

Ouch. I was playing a short Scipii campaign on H/H. (I bought the game from new dealer stock in Feb 2006, so I imagine I am playing Ver. 1.5). I was doing well, with frequent messages about how Mine was the stongest, richest and most advanced faction, when all of a sudden: Ya-a-a-r-r-R!! I'm defeated!! Seeing that Scipii banner in tatters really stinks. The victory conditions didn't say anything about fulfilling said conditions BEFORE some other nation fulfilled theirs. I will get those Egyptians for this....

Meanwhile, I elected to play on for a bit, to actually see if I can meet the victory conditions AS I UNDERSTOOD THEM. And I was wondering: If I eliminate the Carthaginians and the Numidians, per plan, will it count towards unlocking them as a playable faction? Or am I shafted because I have already been "defeated" by the Egyptians (although I have yet to see an Egyptian in this game, aarrgghh!)? And how about the long campaigns (upon which I am about to embark) : Is it possible to get pre-empted in those games also?

    Thank you.

Well, if you defeat Carthage and Numidia, you'll probably get them, except there are certain factions that are unlockable, like, even if you beat them, you can't play as them, so I recomend getting this:http://www.twcenter.net/downloads/db/index.php?mod=74
It will let you play as any faction.

It's theoretically possible to get pre-empted in a long game, but since the AI is essentially incapable to taking Rome, and the SPQR does not expand making their seizure of 50 territories highly unlikely, in effect you can't be. I lost my Carthage short game when I got involved in beating up the Romans and forgot all about the Spanish, who were being quietly inoffensive, until I got the message that Egypt had won. Oops! So I converted to a long game and am in the process of remedying that by beating up the Eggies.

Yeah, the egpytians are thr most annoying faction in RTW, they ALWAYS get big and powerful and will threaten you, destroy the Egyptians as early as possible, or at least severely weaken them.

Heres a trick I learned that completely ruined RTW for me, use it at your discretion:

    Ctrl + S= Quicksave

    Ctrl + L = Quickload

    Saves lives. Cheat? Maybe.

Thanks for the help. I will presume, then, that potentially playable factions can be unlocked, even if you defeat them in a game that you eventually lose.

Ooooo! Now I know we are drifting off-topic; but I am a save fanatic: I save every 20 minutes (except when I can't, cause I'm in the middle of a long battle). This is because my graphics card will often take my computer down unexpectedly. So, does this "Quicksave" work in the middle of a battle (like after you've pressed "START" battle) ?

I save before every turn, and before every battle.... so basically every ten minutes

No, you can't save how your progress goes in a battle. You can win it, you can lose it, but always know you can replay it if you dislike the results... :sweatingb Come on, we've all done it at least once. Nobody's perfect.

Well, I never have problem with Egyptian until the very last of game... except when I'm playing Seleucid or Parthia. Yes, Egyptian is a tought AI enemy to destory, so usually I suggest playing defence at first, then attack the Egypt when you store enough army. Actually, Scipii is quite easy to destory Egypt, as long as your army is enough.

Well... I never had a problem with the Egytians either... never even saw one, let alone fight with them... that's the problem: They beat me without ever even seeing me, because they reached their short campaign victory goals first (I didn't know I was in a race).
