Default Vote on the Patriot Act

Senator Rand Paul has been trying to stall the vote and spark debate. The law will expire at the end of the week if not reauthorized.

Osama is dead, can we get our liberty back now?

I don't usually poke my nose in American affairs, but I honestly think that the threat of another terrorist attack by Bin Laden's successor, or another crazy fundamentalist, is possible. Bin Laden or not, if terrorists want to target the U.S, they will target it regardless of who is in command of the terrorist group.

I believe that the Patriot Act isn't really just there for Al-Qaeda. Again, I'm not an American so this is just my outsider view of it.

    Bin Laden's successor?
Al-Qaeda was never a centralised organization with Osama in the control room. It is just a franchise, and basicly different groups do as they want, that's it.

Wait, he's trying to stall the vote?

Don't you people want your essential liberties back? Or is he merely trying to create awareness?

Ninety percent the problem(yes you read that right) with the patriot act is the name. 99% of the masses have not a damn clue what it really does and a name like the PATRIOT Act is frakking awesome for 30 second sound bytes on TV. He needs awareness to be higher to have a real shot at what he's (presumably) trying to do.
One thing is for certain: the more profoundly baffled you have been in your life, the more open your mind becomes to new ideas.

Technically hes right though. Cartels get rich off of prostitution and drugs. Because the commodity is illegal that makes the supply low and the demand higher. If you legalized MJ for instance you would cut off a major source of funding for Drug Cartels and do more to end the war than we have in the last 30 years. Plus you can regulate it and control it more efficiently as well as make some money off taxing it but you would think Rand is against taxes too.

Regarding Prostitution that should be Legal. Women die and are raped, their belongings stolen and women contract HIV and AIDs. We can better protect women who will do this regardless by regulating it in Brothels. Sex is a commodity and making it illegal is prob unconstitutional as well if the reasoning behind it comes from the Bible.

I voted for him, he is the only person any where near resembling how I feel on these issues. I just wish he would stop making odd statements and voting no on bills that should not be an issue, for instance him being the 1 No vote on the bill to make it illegal to shine a laser pointer on a landing or lifting airplane. I get the idea of less federal regulation but odd place to make a stand.

He is creating awareness. If it went to a vote now it would pass. He is trying to get it in the news and cause a stir.

What are the arguments for the motion in congress?

I hope it expires. There are things in it that are completely useless and unnecessary.

Wiretapping and no warrants necessary for cops to break in. Seriously it doesnt take long for a cop to get a warrant... if he needs one he can have one in 10 minutes. The criminal wont be going anywhere in the mean time.

Yeah its not good. You do not need laws to fight terrorism. You need good intelligence and law enforcement. That is it. Period.

What are the arguments for the motion in congress?

It's time to get rid of the Patriot Act. We never needed it and we certainly don't need it now. Liberty before security.

Plus it's clear the federal government will trample our rights whenever they feel like they have to regardless of if there's legislation saying they can; so we might as well remove that legislation.

That said I'm sure this will pass. It's far too easy to call people who oppose it terrorists.

The only reason this bill ever passed and remains in force is because the average joe has no idea what it entails.

Patriot act... Sounds patriotic. Surely nothing sinister can be in a bill with such a nice name?

A cost benefit analysis should be done to gauge how effective this was in stopping terrorist attacks. After that is presented to the public, there should be a poll done to gauge the public's opinion on the law as they are the ones being directly affected here.
