Consider yourself lucky, in my games the Marius Reforms have all occurred around the year 200 BC.. It's not that I dislike the pre-Marian Roman units, it is just that I get a bit tired of having to wait so long before I can use some new and improved men. The day I get the Reforms that early will be a happy day for me.

whenever i get the Marian Reform, my empire is so large its annoying moving my post-marian legions to the front lines to replace my pre-marian armies. But the wait is worth the improved effectiveness.

In 1.5 the reforms happen right when you finish the Imperial Palace .

I never knew that CA changed this in 1.5 or maybe 1.3 until Lt told me. I got reforms not by building an Imperial Palace but after conquering a city that had one.

    35 years!?! That is quick.

I only just got the Marius Reform, and I actually conquered the world before the reform =/ (this was in 214 BC btw).

In 1.0, it happens when an Imperial Palace is built anywhere.
In 1.2, it can happen when you build an Imperial Palace in Italy AND it's after 220 BC. There's a random element, though, so sometimes it doesn't actually happen until years later.
In 1.5, it happens whenever an Imperial Palace is built in Italy, a little more restrictive than 1.0, but not much. Patavium counts as part of Italy and it has been the first Roman city to build the Palace in every game I've played, thanks to its egregious growth rate.

Thanks for the explanation, gardibolt. It has occurred between 240 B.C and 220 B.C. in the three short campaigns I have played. In this last game, it occurred about 230 B.C.; and I only owned about 8 territories at that time.

I was wondering why my experience did not line up with the statement that the "reform never occurs before 220 B.C." I bought my RTW, in Feb 2006, from a store that was sold out in Jan 2006. I know I don't have Version 1.0; so I must have version 1.5. Yeee Haaa!
