Default Anti-Americanism hammered into future Pakistani military leaders

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110525/...stan_wikileaks

The dispatch is based on the experiences of an American officer who attended a course at the National Defense University in 2008. The officer is quoted as saying that "lecturers often 'teach' their students information that is heavily biased against the United States."
He said one instructor, a brigadier general, claimed that the U.S. National Security Agency trains American journalists. Students — typically senior officers in their 50s — believed in anti-American conspiracy theories like Jewish involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks despite having children studying in the United States, the officer said.
"In contrast to criticism of the U.S., students and instructors were adamant in their approval of all things Chinese," the cable said.

    Except for two facts -
    A. Pakistan is supposedly an ally of the US
    B. It possesses nuclear weapons which are controlled by a belligerent military

    A. So is israel but they are known to conduct espionage on our nation.

    B. Russia... North Korea...

Not saying Russia and North Korea are the same but think of it this way. I would include the US on that list as well, we are more belligerent than Pakistan.

No, it's not. But it is a place where the Prime Minister is documented on video badmouthing the United States to his constituents.

Pakistan currently under contract by the USA, while its long-term future is most definitely Chinese. There is no love...there never was any.

Exactly. I think the OP is coming from the false assumption that the relationship between the US and Pakistan is anything more than business (and a poor one at that). Also it has been illustrated time and again that one of the main tools the Pakistani government/military machine uses to stay in control is paranoia and fear. Teaching mistrust of a hegemonic power makes sense when you must drum up threats to justify your own existence.

Certainly not the case. Pakistan has always been a pain for the USA. In terms of marriage an abuse one, for both. A case for Jerry Springer, not so much Dr. Phil.

Both have been cooperating and slapping each other in the face at times, both need each other for their dirty work, both got seriously burned after 9/11.

The US never had another option in the region. The stakes are high: Gas and oil from Central Asia, trade routes from and to central Asia, gas from Iran to India, China's ambitions in the region -protecting sea lanes and resources, opening a land route from Gwadar to Western China, US ambitions in the region - sort of the same as China, Iran expanding it's natural influence, Pakistan vs India, India vs China and a looming Sunni/Shia conflict.

What do you think prevails for the military and political establishment in both countries- a few dead soldiers?? (In the case of Pakistan far more off course.) I'll go for geopolitics.

I am not optimistic about NATO maintaining a foothold there: Russia, China, Iran, India, and Pakistan do not want Uncle Sam in Afghanistan.

China does not want to entrap itself in military fashion as the US has done. It -at least for now- refused Pakistan's offer to build a military base in Gwadar. It first wants stability. Their relation with Pakistan goes much deeper and is much older. And for the first time they can outspend the US. Right now they are very cautious. Quite a few Chinese have been killed or kidnapped by a variety of armed groups within Pakistan.

There is another murky reason why Pakistan remain vital for US interest. Pakistan has always leased troops to the various US backed dictators in the Middle east, has been extremely instrumental in suppressing rebellions against the regimes there. That still has not changed:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...491615962.html

Saudi officials have approached Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Central Asian states to lend diplomatic support—and potentially military assistance in some cases—to help stifle a majority Shiite revolt in Sunni-led Bahrain, a conflict that has become a symbol of Arab defiance against Iran.
The chief of the Saudi National Security Council, Prince Bandar bin Sultan al Saud, asked Pakistan's powerful generals in March to lend support for the operation in Bahrain, according to Pakistani, U.S. and Saudi officials briefed on the meetings.
The officer said a Pakistani battalion has been in Bahrain since before the unrest began to help train Bahraini forces, but hasn't taken part in the crackdown. Bahrain's police force includes a substantial contingent of Pakistani recruits.

Military ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia go back decades. Pakistan receives hundreds of millions of dollars a year in Saudi aid, much of it in the form of subsidized oil.
So we'll continue to sponsor countries with a hostile population towards us, it's no surprise that Wahabism runs so deep in Pakistan given the relations between the Wahabis (Saudi regime)and Pakistan, they have grown very cosy since the 1979 as in the Saudis wanting to encircle Iran from two sides with Wahabis able to counter the Shia's directly. Saudi Arabia sponsors many groups targeting the Shia's in Pakistan.

Europe's and the United States foreign policy in the region has lost all direction and sense.

Wow. Pakistanis will be anti-American? This is a huge change because they used to be anti-American and now, on the other hand, they are anti-American. So this is an enormous shift. Going from always being anti-American to continue to be Anti-American is a change no one expected.

    Which isn't true.

Pakistan has been under a co-signed joint contract between the US and China since 1972.

It's long term future will continue to be dominated by both.

Default Anti-Americanism rife in Pakistan army institution - Wikileaks

This doesn't surprise me too much, but it is nonetheless worrying since these guys are fighting against a militancy which espouses Anti-Americanism among other things.Their views perhaps mirror popular perceptions of America in Pakistan.

Anti-Americanism rife in Pakistan army institution - Wikileaks

    By Zeeshan Haider

    ISLAMABAD | Wed May 25, 2011 10:52am BST
(Reuters) - Officers received training biased against the United States at a prestigious Pakistan army institution, according to Wikileaks, underscoring concern that anti-Americanism in the country's powerful military is growing amid strains with Washington.

A U.S. diplomatic cable said the former U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, found officers at the National Defence University (NDU) were "naive and biased" against the United States, a key ally which gives Pakistan billions of dollars of aid to help fight Islamist militants.

Fears the military could be harbouring militant sympathisers have grown since U.S. forces found and killed Osama bin Laden this month in a Pakistani garrison town, where the al Qaeda leader had probably lived for several years.

Pakistan's military also controls the country's nuclear arms, and a series of attacks against military installations has heightened fears about the safety of those weapons.

"The elite of this crop of colonels and brigadiers are receiving biased NDU training with no chance to hear alternative views of the U.S.," the Wikileaks cable, which was published in the Dawn newspaper, quoted Patterson as saying.

"Given the bias of the instructors, we also believe it would be beneficial to initiate an exchange program for instructors."

Some of the officers believed the CIA was in charge of the U.S. media, the report said.

Anti-Americanism runs high among many of Pakistan's mainly Muslim people but it has deepened after bin Laden's killing in a secret U.S. raid which many Pakistanis see as breach of sovereignty.

Patterson said the United States must target a "lost generation" of military officers who missed training programmes in the United States after Washington imposed sanctions against Pakistan in the 1990s for its nuclear programme.

The cables also documented the account of a U.S. army officer, Colonel Michael Schleicher, who attended a course at NDU and corroborated the views expressed by Patterson.

"The senior level instructors had misperception about U.S. policies and culture and infused the lectures with these suspicions, while the students share these misconceptions with their superiors despite having children who attended universities in the U.S. or London," the cables quoted Schleicher as saying.

Hamayoun Khan, a teacher at NDU, however denied that anti-Americanism was being taught at the university.

"I haven't seen bias which she has mentioned here," he said.

Dawn said dozens of cables from U.S. embassies around the world also showed that the United States continued to intensely monitor Pakistan's nuclear and missiles programmes.

In 2008, the U.S. deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Ankara, Nancy McEldowney, detailed her discussions with Turkish authorities about the U.S. desire to see action taken against suspicious shipments to Pakistan.

U.S. officials, according to the cable, "urged the GOT (government of Turkey) to contact the governments of Japan and Panama to request the shipment be diverted to another port and returned."

Pakistan's nuclear programme came under increasing international scrutiny after the 2004 confessions of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's atom bomb, about his involvement in sales of nuclear secrets to Iran, Iraq and North Korea.

The government pardoned Khan but put him under house arrest. A court in 2009 ordered his release.

A militant raid on a navy base in the southern city of Karachi this week has raised fresh anxiety about the ability of Pakistani security forces to protect installations and the country's nuclear arsenal.

A Taliban spokesman said militants had "so far" no plans to seize Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

"We will protect these weapons from dangers from foreigners," Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

Many Pakistanis believe the United States and India would like to confiscate their nuclear weapons.
