This was the 451 appearance of Halley's comet, which strung out a few days before and after. Back then comets were a bad omen. Maybe this would have been Attila's "sign" he would lose the battle?

The special thing with Halley's comet is it is the only short period orbit that becomes visible to the unaided eye. But there seems to be a bright comet every few years but these have orbits of thousands of years.

There was Comet McNaught in early 2007 that was bright enough to be seen easily in Twilight for a few days.

That was the brightest since the great comet of 1965.

But yep, Halley's would have been a naked eye comet in 451. But surely it was a Hun victory? His Enemy Theodoric was killed and due to the incompetence of the Roman commander Attila walked with a load of loot?

The second two images are invisible, but to emphasize my point look at 1066, Halley was there on march 30th. That's a long way from hastings but still.
