In 3ds max go to uv map instead of unwrap uvw. Once you select this you get to choose a planar map in X,Y or Z axis from the side panel, press whichever you need, then hit 'fit' so it covers the whole object. After this go to unwrap uvw as normal.

er something went wrong here this is what i did
opened model from the top menu selected uvw map. from the side menu, planer then tried x,y,z,
they all made the textures on the model go all over the place,so i picked one and hit fit i was hoping the textures would all fit in place but they didnt,so i went to uvw unwrap and everything was normal but in game the shield pattern is still warped,

something else id like to know is there a way of exporting the uv pattern to photoshop so i know what goes where or do i have to do that by eye, and guess work

    sorry about dp

no i seem to be going round in circles(again)the planer map dosnt seem to have any effect in game although i found a way to get it to work in max

when i put the skin mod back to the top it reverts to the distorted texture
and if i export with the uvw map on top skrewy shield

First of all, you don't need UVW map, just unwarp UVW.

About the distortion. Make sure the two sides of the shield are made out of two different elements. If it isn't select all the polygons of one of the sides of the shield and click on detach. There select element and click ok.
