Default CPS to bring forward manslaughter charges against PC over death of Ian Tomlinson

In April 2009 Ian Tomlinson, a newspaper seller, was walking home during the the G20 protests. He was attacked from behind by PC Simon Hardwood, who struck him in the back of the leg with a baton. Tomlinson, hands in pockets, fell to the ground. Three minutes later he collapsed and died.

The Met initially got disgraced coroner Freddy Patel to perform an autopsy. Patel, a man who has since been forbidden from practising due to incompetence, found in favour of the police and that Tomlinson died of natural causes. A second autopsy contradicted this.

If the English Legal system is anything like the Australian Legal system, he'll get off with a pretty light sentence, if he even get's convicted. It seems pretty thin, to be honest.

It's not thin. There's been a Hell of a lot of investigation and reinvestigation due to the initial MET cover up.

Patel was pretty clearly in the pocket of the MET, especially if you look at his history. While I'd prefer the PC be charged with murder, this is a good move so far, however I expect this is a deal to stop the investigation going any higher up the chain.

The MET have seemed to be having quite a few cover-ups in recent years amongst this, the re-emergence of the phone hacking scandal and the Jean-Charles de Menezes case. Do we know what sort of sentence the CPS is going to be pushing for yet?

Yep. An unlawful killing and manslaughter for sure.

When striking someone on the legs you don't really expect to kill them, so he should get a light jail sentence of just a couple of years.

Good to see the wheels of justice over there working when it comes to cops.

Australian police are about 50% douchebags.

I'm quite worried about the safety of a trial in which it is going to be almost impossible to find an impartial jury who haven't already made up their minds.

Sure, I think that's reasonable, but at the end of the day, the police shouldn't be attacking innocent men in the back for no reason.

Good. The cover up that was attempted was a disgrace. Good to see something being done.

You should hear about the ridiculousness in the US. The police murder someone and get paid leave... basically a vacation, only to return to the force later.

In Vegas this happens all the time and justice is never served. What ridiculous is that this killing below was basically a firing squad.

They got off. Whats even more ridiculous is that since these cops are obviously terrible human being some of them go on the commit further crimes.

Whats hilarious is that he just gave a criminal a .22 Ruger, and THAT is what it took to give this guy no pay suspension. Not murder. Police shouldn't be treated as if they are above the law because they will think they are.

And what about the Swat team that murdered an innocent man in arizona

    http://word.truthintheword.org/news-...w-enforcement/

You know they are going to get off.

In the US this is pretty much down to a daily occurrence.

In Chicago I once read they gunned down a cougar (the animal) using over 100 rounds of ammunition hitting it ONLY 15 times. Can you imagine that? Its like that movie Idiocracy with those hillbilly cops shooting the out of that car.

Yes, because an average bloke walking home who gets clubbed by police is exactly like a guy who goes to Costco with two loaded weapons and then flips out because he can't take them inside.

One question though. I think that we need to know why that Mr Patel was employed.

The Metropolitan Police force? He made several favourable rulings in terms of autopsies.

Tomlinson deserves posthumous justice, if only to ensure that the chances of this happening again are diminished.

    One can hope.
