In April 2009 Ian Tomlinson, a newspaper seller, was walking home during the the G20 protests. He was attacked from behind by PC Simon Hardwood, who struck him in the back of the leg with a baton. Tomlinson, hands in pockets, fell to the ground. Three minutes later he collapsed and died.
The Met initially got disgraced coroner Freddy Patel to perform an autopsy. Patel, a man who has since been forbidden from practising due to incompetence, found in favour of the police and that Tomlinson died of natural causes. A second autopsy contradicted this.
