    Icon9 america's insane homophobia

i have no problem with homosexuals, most canadians don't, but i went to vermont last year for a family reunion, keep in mind the north is the less rascist, not as fatass part of america, and my gay nephew, on his first day of high school, got a dentention from the principal which read "he was expressing unholy ideas" and was later beaten (i mean beaten) up by 4 "jocks".And the sad part is,thiis wasnt even a catholic school or anything like that, it was an average american public school....

Right, so you start off a thread denouncing prejudice and throw in your own prejudiced beliefs right in the OP. Cool story bro.

This instance with your nephew is an exception to the rule; it's wrong (and I use this word very loosely because another synonym might be more apt) to pass judgment on a country for one instance of bigotry and hate; especially since you are so emotionally tied to the event.

The irony of this thread is because...

For First Time, Majority of Americans Favor Legal Gay Marriage

    by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- For the first time in Gallup's tracking of the issue, a majority of Americans (53%) believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages. The increase since last year came exclusively among political independents and Democrats. Republicans' views did not change.

You mean more like ''some american's homophobia(don't need to put the adjective insane in a wrong place)''

Yes a large part of the American Population that's evangelical is crazy homophobic... something every country has to deal with.

What did he do? Prance around like a fairy on his first day squealing ''Look at me! I'm gay! I like boys! Respect me! Love me!'' and then act indignant when people knocked him down for it?

    Whatever the case, not deserved.

Um... does that happen a lot where you live? America is very homophobic in my experience. The (young male) U.K is pretty homophobic in the sense of effemininity being looked down upon, but not in the sense of thinking homosexuality is entirely unnatural. Our attitude is 'men should be masculine', the US attitude is that homosexuality is unholy.

A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

Glad to see we have an expert on American view points here to set us straight (no pun intended).

Your experience now? I can tell you've done some really fascinating anthropological work.

Australians, on the other hand, are quite often spectacular bigots.

    way to generalise;

i'm aware of the poor image of australians as racists and i'm not denying it; there is racism in australia but not nearly as bad as everyone thinks.

i've experienced racism in australia as a non anglo australian, but that is thankfully rare and far between.

Well, lets remember that Australia is also an immigrant society similar as US, hence racism is perhaps less common than say, certain Europe-centered nations ().

Mate, Europe is infested with immigrants. Germany has some 4 Million of Turkish descent and loads of Balkans ; France is full of Senegalese, Ivorians etc, England is full of Pakistanis, Bangladeshians, Indians etc ; Italy and Malta are currently overloaded with Somalians, Ethiopians, Libyans, Tunisians etc ; Sweden has become a multi-ethnic country in recent years(mostly Balkans and Arabs) etc etc

Sure the countries weren't built on immigration(at least, not in recent history) like the US and Australia, but we're still loaded with immigration problems at the moment.

I think fundamentalist abrahamic religion is the problem.

I know americans have a love for religious revivals and all that crazy jazz... but right now that doesn't speak for the majority of Americans.

This one time I went to Canada (the cleaner part, not the filthy parts) and these 2 guys beat me up because I had on a NASCAR hat. See I can make up random, insulting, outlandish and vaguely anecdotal stories too.

I went to high school in Kentucky (is this part of the 'fatass' parts you were talking about?) and granted it was Lexington, so an urban environment, but there were several classmates who came out and no one did anything to them. I had a very close friend who came out in the 11th grade. Yeah it was a little awkward in the beginning because I never saw it coming, but no one laid the hate down on him.

I love it how people generalize the South as a bunch of "gay haters" when that is not the case. Most people who make fun of the South have never been to the South.

Btw youtube videos do not express the majority of views held by a group of people.

It's a social experiment. If you actually watched it all, it actually praised Texans that they stood up for the homosexual couple. When the same experiment was done in New York, very few people stood up for the homosexual couple, compared to Texas.

Err...if anything that video shows that even in the more conservative areas of Texas, at least that's what the guy claimed, people will stick up for those who you'd think might be persecuted. So much for Texas being so intolerant.
