    Default Book suggestions?

Since most of us who lurk here in tatw forums have read lotr trilogy. I read the trilogy last week to the end and enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoy reading other fantasy. So just wondering If you guys could suggest, me and for everyone else interested in books, some good books for the summer.

Here's my list of good books, probably familiar to most of you.

A song of Ice and Fire
    The long price quartet
    The first Law
    The name of the wind
    Soldier's son
The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone
    the lies of locke lamorra

Well hes not really a mod, and ive heard they get angry when people steal their colours. Petty pricks...

Probably IBTL but hopefully not, could be a good thread.

I've always liked David Gemmells stuff, hes written a whole range of fantasy stuff which is all over the place, with a bit of sci fi thrown in too I suppose.

I quite like the great song but its a bit away from his normal stuff I'd say. Same for swords of night and day. Anyway if anyone has a good idea of what type of fantasy theyre looking for pm me and I'll tell you if any of his stuff is similar.

It's against the forum rules to impersonate a moderator. Besides that, it's pathetic behaviour. You can download and set up a free phpBB forum yourself where you can be the boss if that makes you feel important inside. This is a perfectly fine thread, stay out of it if you don't like it.

On topic: Everyone should read The Silmarillion, Tolkien considered it his main work, and it's my favourite of Tolkien's books as well. The story of the War of the Ring is just a pale shadow compared to what happened in the First and Second Age. The book is set up differently though, it's not one story but more like a history book with many stories. The amount of information can be daunting sometimes, but it's totally worth it. Keep following the stories on the map of Beleriand, that will help you keep track of it.

Would advice you to try again but begin with the Foundation Triology [ = The Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation].
They are built as short stories, not as the long (and not IMHO not as good) later novels incorporated into the serie, post- and pre-. The earlier has a more scientific, anthropological approach than in the more philosophical [and] theoretical later works. The latter gives us characters to follow, but Asimov is far better at ideas and concept than psychology and character building or the drama a good character require.

Muffer know the rules and is often clear about him not a mod'. His experience of this forum gives him a lot of credibility though about when a thread is in line or out of it, while if he himself is out of it then moderators can correct him themself.

David Gemmell was a great author, his books are great, you just keep on reading.

Another great author is Markus Heitz. His works are also very good, he has multiple series, which are all very good and very entertaining.

I also like Christoper Paolini's books very much (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr). Though the film wasn't that good, the books are great.

Also a fan of Paolini (and a hater of the movie ), cant wait for the last one.

Also Terry Pratchett, bit of an out there style but I like it.

Cant miss CS Lewis too, never liked the main ones overly myself but I liked it overall.

Oh and Stephen Donaldson, bit of a darker tolkien.

In addition to the many excellent suggestions above, I have enjoyed Fred Saberhagen (Empire of the East trilogy and the Swords books) even though his characters feel anachronistic.

Clive Barker for darker more adult and emotionally stronger themes.

Gene Wolfe for those who want an intellectual challenge (especially The Book of the New Sun).

    L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt for the foundations of the modern Fantasy genre.

Fritz Leiber for his excellent Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser books.

Jack Vance for Fantasy/Science Fiction fusion. Baroque societies with enigmatic self-sufficient protagonists.

Roger Zelazny for slick fast-paced Chandleresque fantasy (the Chronicles of Amber).

-.- fail should be have not shave.

The color I used is 'moderator green' Jean Luc is one of the few mods that uses blue most use darkgreen.

Anyway this has nothing to do with the mod and should be discussed in the Tolkien General Discussion thread. It exists somewhere in the deep pits of this forum.

I dare to disagree. This is simply a thread where members can discuss about the writers they like, whose works are similar to Tolkien's. I am curious how this will develop.

Philip Pulmann's trilogy (His Dark Materials)
And If You have read only the Lord of the Rings, why don't you go deeper and read the other grat book, the Silmarillion? it's not so well-made like the trilogy ('twas a work-in-progress) but is the main story.

I'm suprised no one had mentioned Guy Gavriel Kay. The man is genius, if you 've read "Tigana" you 'll know what i mean.
However, do not read his most famous "Fionavar Tapestry" trilogy first, for two reasons:
    1) It's his first fantasy book, raw and even childish compared to his later work. (However it's much better than other allegged "fantasy" books)
    2) He uses a great part of Tolkien's work to built up his mythology, making the lore look like a bad copy of the Silmarillion. The resemplance is pretty obvious to someone familiar with Tolkien.

That doesn't mean the trilogy isn't good, just don't let it affect you attittide towards the rest of his work, which is exceptional.
If i remember correctly, he even helped Cristopher Tolkien to put up the Silmarillion...
