Default What is the main aspect of RTW that you people enjoy?

I asked this question in another thread but I thought I'd make a new one - I'm just wondering, what is the main aspect of RTW do you people enjoy? For me it was the campaign map (ie the turn based part), anybody else feel the same way? The battles were thrilling to begin with, but got pointless for me after a while, though I started playing it on a laptop (touchpad) just before then which might have detracted from the enjoyment. I've not played any RTW for a while (was in the middle of a RTR campaign which I'm planning to pick up later this year, need to try out BI as well, and also MTW), not much time for gaming at the moment, the time I have I spend on Civ4.

I agree with you Harlanite, I am really attracted to the campaign map. It is unique and so much different from other games that it really stands out as a special feature of Rome.

Probably the campaign map, as said before, and the opportunity to command massive ancient armies in pitched battles is pretty cool too.

The best part was probably the traits system (with EB installed). In vanilla, I don't know, the roman civil war was enjoyable the first time. Really, I enjoyed alot of the mods more than anything in vanilla.

I actually appreciate a lot of RTW compared to the other RTS's I've played.

The possibility of customizing (Though, being unable to have our great modelers and coders be able to fully customize it is a loss) for novices at coding and editing is really great.

But it's probably the combination of Campaign map and Battles that I really enjoy.Though with unedited speeds and stats, battles are very boring, the level it can reach by modification is really excellent.

The fact that you can coordinate diplomacy, armies, and income on the campaign map while being able to clash with other armies on the battle map. In comparison to AoE & RoN I prefer RTW due to this main factor. (Even though RoN has a similar style) You also get many options for each character, city, and army on the campaign map.

The fact that you can rewrite history: instead of seeing the rise of Rome as a huge empire, there's quite a chance you see Carthage becoming the major power in the meditterean, fighting the rising Iberian tribes or the Seleucids.

I LOVE the battles. I also think that the campaign is great as it gives your battles purpose.

I love all the features of RTW but the one feature that caught my eye and drove me to reserve the game was the battles. When I heard that you can command the Roman legions and lead them to either victory or disgrace, I just had to have this game. Besides it's faults, RTW was a dream come true for me.

I love the Battle map, if its large armies pitted against each other then its worth it.

The bad thing was the games lack of "Spirit" through the whole thing it felt rather empty and void. There really wasn't any story or characters to bring to life the Ancient Period. They could have at least had some Characters and events that keep the pase intriguing. other then that after a while of playing you start to feel as if there's nothing but banners and buttons, really Void.

I like looking at the models, especially the modded ones that the modders make. Soooo pretty. Especially if you have legions upon legions of them.

I also like watching armies or great leaders melt away when my Assassins and Diplomats kill/bribe them.

    The campaign map.
It's great seeing a few city-states rise to power and dominate everything.

When i first heard of total war, was Shogun, but i hesitated to buy it. Then one day, i had this demo disc from a magazine with the "soon to be released" Medieval Total war. The demo was a historic mission of Charlemagne. First I had no idea what I suppose to do (got used to the command&counquer style "mass-rush" to win tactic) and i just couldn't win. I began to understand that I have to think of what to do and what I would do in real life and use my troops as they are suppose to be used. That made me very happy, due to the lack of such games on the market that time.
Of course it led me to buy all total war games immediately and played them all.

For RTW, i was first expecting a lot more tactical options on the battlefield (like M:TW had), so i felt somewhat let-down. Plus most people who mastered playing M:TW, R:TW Just didn't give as much challenge, neither on the campaign map, neither on the battlefield.

I advise all those, who enjoy the R:TW campaign map, that you have seen nothing yet, compare to M:TW's map. It's just simply not comparable. I'm not talking about graphics, but the far more sophisticated options and ideas you could make on M:TW's map, which is lacking on R:TW.

For me, what I enjoy(ed) on RTW is to see the 3D graphics for the first time (was about 3 months)and get my hands dirty modding around, but as I said, after M:TW, I just somehow found R:TW emptier and lacking depth. So what I enjoyed is really was short as gameplay goes (talking about the vanilla), but i enjoyed more modding it and feeling satisifed after i managed to tailor the game around.

Well, let's see if CA can suprise us and give us hardcore TW players the option in MedievalII -at least- an option to play it like M:TW's morse sophisticated style. Make these games 'brain-scaleable", damn it, if there is no other way to mass-market something! -

My favorite aspect of RTW is that it is easily modable. I feel that this was one game that could be moded easily into what people like, or another aspect was the revolutionary 3d campaign map.

To me, it's the combination of things: the 3D campaign map (as opposed to a Risk-style map), the ability to run battles, elements of role-playing in your family members, and the Sim City aspects of planning your towns and making sure your taxpayers are all happy (but not TOO happy). The combination of these items makes RTW endlessly fascinating; I'm glad I'm not too good at the battles since I'd hate to be one of the folks who lose interest due to the marginal AI.

I personally like the scale of the game the most. being able to fight battles with thousands and thousands of troops, with some similarity to how the ancients fought them is simply awesome. this is especially effective because i've managed to get my computer to run with a huge unit scale....*laughs maniacally*

I personally am a huge fan of anything to do with ancient Rome. When this game around I knew that I would end up loving it. I had played Shogun before at a friends house, and though it was a good concept for a game. So when Rome was announce I knew that it must be great.

As for aspects in the game, I can't really pick just one so I'll say the empire building. It is by far the funnest, and hardest part of the game.
