Default So How Did YOU Get Into Modding RTW (If you do that is)

If you are one of those who has the ability to create mods such as Napoleonic TW, RTR etc then i ask, how did you get into it? How did you become a modder? How did you discover how to transform the game to your likings? You see when M2TW comes out it would be nice if i had the ability to become a team member of a mod for the game. Like if i had talent in a certain skill (skining/animating etc).

i started just from modding little things to my liking, such as stats, or removing/adding units to a game. then i modded the starting campaign map to another mod which taught me alot about settlement placement and other things. than i made my own map and campaign.

its actually really simple with all the great tutorials around here and at the org. it just takes some time to do, and although some of it is fun and intresting, other aspects are really boring and hard to finish up.

Sorry to post this out of nowhere, but how do you get the tools? Is there a site or something?

I got into modding because i wanted to see the persians portrayed accurately. After spending enough time with really talented modders ive begun to start skinning. Hopefully some talent will rub off on me!

And socrates there are certain tools you can use but the best ones are very expensive - photoshop, 3dsmax

but things like gmax (for modelling) are free and GIMP is free skinning software but i have no idea how to use it. Im on the paintshop pro free trial

I got into modding because my ego is too big to be tamed by ordinary measures. I must impose my version of TW upon you all! It's all about self-love.

Seriously, I did a lot of work with WCIII, (though nothing ultimately came from it), and that gave me the skills. Then I decided to start my mod because I wanted a different campaign map, and it blossomed from there.

Too bad campaign map editing has been so tough thus far. I was forced to start off with just a 64X39 slice (16th the area of the vanilla map, to give you an idea) to cut my teeth on.

I'm no cartographer, no historian, no artist, so all I've really got going for me is my vision, dogged persistence, and willingness to sit for two-three hours straight and grind out a functioning army.

I started reading the tutorials so long ago, but before that I had experimented a little on my own, to little avail. I approached the now revered modder Gaius Julius and asked him for some help. He gave me all kinds of little tips and idea's etc. I had modded M:TW and AOE: Age of Kings, but never RTW. Gaius's help was a jumpstart, and although i've retired from modding, I have loads of leftover work.

I was enthralled by the idea of creating my own, custom army through skinning. Who wouldn't want to design their own army?

I read a few tutorials on this site (as well as others) about skinning. Most were for programs I don't have, but I managed to learn how to use Corel Draw for the same purpose. I made a few random skins and was invited to join a couple of mods.

Above all else, it's a fun hobby.

I started firstly with modding MTW, in July. I announced my first mod, then I started modding seriously. I worked on the map, units etc... until BI was announced, so I moved my interest to RTW.

I learned coding, and then slowly mapping and scripting. I am still a newb at mapping, but I am learning fast.

And soon, I will start learning skinning.

I found the site www.wc3campaigns.com (www.wc3campaigns.net from now on) around mid 2003 and started skinning when I learned how to do. In the mid 2004 or something like that, oinkerwinkle released some tools to model for wc3 without 3ds max 5, so I started using it a while. But I found 3ds max 7 alot more easy to work with (more and better tutorials), and because wc3 didn't support 3ds max 7, I looked after a better game to mod, and as I bought rome total war three days after the release, I started to look after a good rtw modding forum, wich happened to be www.twcenter.net. There, I found a link to the mod Warhammer - Total War (www.zodiak-productions.com), which is the mod I'm modeling and skinning in right now...

    End of story

I started by modding the campaign files to allow non playable factions to be played. Then it went to unit stats, adding in units, then skinning, and before long animation and moddelling...

I started off modding traits in RTR 5.4, changing things so only Consuls and ex-consuls would have command stars. It worked well enough that I got totally stuck in my Roman camapaign. That's how I got to the TWC too (Spartan. s name was on one of the tutorials posted at the .com) I think my first post here concerned trait modding. Later I moved on to terrain mapping because I'm familiar with geographical information systems and realised there was a lot of under-utilized potential there. Started with the relief maps, then ground types. These days I spend a lot of time on the map related txt files as well and even have done some hex-editing. If you'd told me that a year ago.........

You can only play vanilla for so long before it starts to grow old. Modding keeps the game fresh and new, especially if you're the one making the changes. (P.S. - I know this is my first post but I have been a steady modder for about six months now) Peace.

I said I would help create unit cards for RTR 6.0. One thing led to another and I was working on skins and models. After awhile people said I was getting good at it and so I kept at it.
