*apocalypse
its supposed to be earthquakes and stuff, not a nazi invasion (that happens after all the true believers have been raptured and the earthquakes have ended)
odi et amo quare id faciam fortasse requiris / nescio sed fieri sentio et excrucior
Actually, Apocalypse is a loan word for Greek that only means "to reveal." Like Holocaust, which merely means "burnt offering (to gods)", these words have similarly meant one thing in the ancient world that has been transcribed into a completely different meaning in the modern world.
Anyways, the 'typical' dispensationalist evangelical Protestant (and it is purely a dispensationalist evangelical Protestant belief) is that there will be a rapture, either before, during, or after a tribulationary period, and that tribulationary period will be dominated by some sort of anti-Christ/Christian one-world autocracy (think either Big Brother, or in more nuanced forms, Brave New World) and basically will kill remaining Christians while simultaneously enduring environmental, political, social, and ecological disasters on both earthly and cosmic scales until Christ returns and judges humanity.
It's persistence is mostly fueled from residual Cold War phobias (such as a perceived prophecy that Russia/USSR, or Gog of Magog, will invade Israel and be miraculously defeated) and the American/Western Culture War.

I cannot understand why this has taken such a hold among the people of God. The very idea turns the Gospel of Jesus Christ on its head. For those interested the story goes that at some point Jesus will rapture the church and then take up residency of the world for one thousand years during which those on earth now seeing Him can be converted and those that still reject Him will go into eternal punishment.
The first problem I have with this is that it goes opposite to believing by faith, the faith of Jesus Christ, this new thing being advocated by sight and not faith. The second is that there isn't going to be any further thousand year reign as we are already in it, it being called the times of the Gentiles. The term one thousand is a Biblical figure of 10x10x10, ten being a number of completion, Father, Son and Holy Ghost being composite of that figure.
So in terms of time the only hint as to that is that Jesus Christ will come back when the tribulation being enacted on those still on earth in those moments becomes so overwhelming that He needs to intervene. Rather than rapture, the Hebrew word means to be plucked up, even violently, which points to the ernest of the occasion being a lot more than rapturous although that might take place once relief and trauma subsides.
The idea emanated originally within the Roman Catholic church during the Reformation to diminish the teachings of the Protesters that Justification by Faith is the only method by which men could be saved. Subsequently it was laid to rest until some Irish evangelicals in the twentyfirst century brought it back and in which many of our churches of today still adhere to. But as another example as to the value of the thing let it be quite clear that if those yet still on the planet under the rule of Jesus can be converted by vision alone, what then of all the dead Jews who saw Jesus yet crucified Him?
So...what's your point?

Off topic: Its really amazing to me how some folks take the most banal topic and make something interesting of it here in the EMM.

"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
