Right guys, I had several questions to ask you

I am about to get some inheritance, and although I am putting most of it away, I want to buy one thing: A new desktop.

I want to be able to run Shogun on Ultra, and run most games as well as it being able to be upgraded in the future. I cannot build PCs or do it myself There is no real budget, just keep it reasonable. A monitor would be required as I am currently using an integrated desktop. I heard Alienware is overpriced?

    It is.

Look up a store in your country that provides computer assembly and has reasonable prices. Atleast here in Finland, all the major shops have a service where you can select all the parts you wish and they will assemble the computer.
If you want to run Shogun on ultra I'd probably go for a intel 2500k/nVidia gtx 570/4gb ram + standard 1/2tb hdd + 60gb SSD

Posting a budget would help a lot, even if you don't have one realistically it makes finding things for you easier.

As you live in the UK, a few well known makers (as you don't want to build yourself) are Chillblast, Cyberpower and Wired2Fire. Don't get anything from a "big" pc brand when you are spending decent money on a gaming machine. There is plently of stuff that someone could recommend but you do need a budget. The above is a safe choice (although you may prefer amd graphics, I don't play Shogun myself so don't know what is more optimized for it). Personally I would get a base unit and buy a separate monitor (rather than a "package"), you never know what they are going to be like so it's easier to get one with loads of reviews to be a safe choice.

There are plenty places that do respectable gaming PC's that are reasonably priced, Scan, Overclockers and Yoyotech to name a few but it will always be cheaper to DIY it rather then build one but your right Alienware or Dellware are overpriced (they were even before Dell bought them out).

Since you don't have a fixed budget I would get a system like this one from OCUK and choose to upgrade the video card to a 2Gb HD6950 for the simple reason you next monitor will most likely be 1080 resolution and Shogun 2 on ultra, DX11 works well with lots of video card ram.

The only problem I have with the above whilst it's £950 with a 12 month warranty and a pre overclock I could build the same system for £765 which is nearly £200 cheaper and for that sort of saving you can get your OS licence and most (if not all) of your new monitor for sort of cash.

If you have a pair of working hands you should be fine. Everyone has to do it for the first time once. I would say it is not a million miles from putting together lego!

Do you have any friends/ relatives who have any experience putting together pc's?

If not have a look at some guides, there are a few stickied in this forum. If you do a bit of reading then you may start to feel a bit more confident.

If money is no object though, the maybe £200 may be worth it for peace of mind.

A budget would be really helpful, though you're looking at ~£1K for an ultra spec. As was already mentioned, AMD HD6950 2GB at least is the way to go. SII eats graphics Ram to a point that nVidia doesn't provide, and anyway it's optimised for AMD anyway.
