By editing those files. Use Notepad++ if you're going to be doing a lot of work.

Found out the way, thanks for your help !
Do you know where I could find a tutorial on the desc_formations_ai and descr_formations files ? Because I want to change the formations of the armies at the start of the battle and to make the ai to send its skirmish units first before the melee (well I want a skirmish happen before the "true" battle) but I'm quite lost.

I don't know if there is a tutorial. I worked out what I needed to know by reading the file.

Forcing a skirmish phase on the AI can be scripted. How to script it is something you'll have to work out. Consider that scripting for the campaign is quite tricky and that's a turn based environment. A real time environment should be more challenging, or at least a different kind of challenge. Check out vanilla's historic battle scripts.

I believe the performance of the ai can be changed through the battle_config and config_ai_battle text files as well. Again they are not easy to understand but there are options for which units are in awareness of others, so skirmish units can be edited this way also. Have a look, some of it may be self explanatory, finding the correct numbers will be the time consuming part.

Or find a mod that has the battle ai you like and compare to your own.
