I played a Soviet campaign not long ago for the first time, and by 1940 Germany occupied all of Western Europe. That hasn't happened once while playing as a nation remotely friendly to the Nazis. I recently started a Turkish campaign (going quite well), and decided to invade the USSR for oil and to build my pan Turkic empire. The Soviets were crumbling, with 70% of VPs captured. The Germans were butchering them. But the second I invaded the German assault stagnated and were pushed back. This was after they lost most of their industrial centers to the Germans, most of their oil wells to me, and their resource rich central Asian provinces.

Coincidence??!!! I think not!

Ugh, you must not know about the horrifically bad Soviet Surrender, the Bitter Peace. Unless you're playing Finland, Japan, or Romania, any nation that attacks the USSR other than Germany will get *nothing* when the USSR surrenders. The three nations I named get their cores plus some small strips of land. Yep, that's total crap, especially since HOI3 is supposed to be a sandbox game. The only mod out there that fixes this is the HPP mod, and I personally wrote the new Soviet surrender events for HPP v1.8 and later. ICE and the other mods still use the BS vanilla surrender.

Ok then I shall go back to a previous save, wait till the peace, and then kick them while they're down.

Yep, that's the way to go. The 2nd time they surrender is the normal one, where you can annex it or create a puppet. It's only the 1st surrender where everyone but Germany and the 3 I mentioned lose everything.
