/Update February 28,2016:
Being absent from TW forums for quite a long time I just noticed (well, I noticed a lot of PM's pointing that out to me) that my threads that included downloads based on local attachments are no longer working as intended, because those attachmenst were erased. Because it seems that some people are still looking for those mods, I decided to look for them myself and reupload them. Unfortunately I don't have time and patience right now to check those mods, so I'm simply uploading pack files I found in my Shogun2 Data folder, which means those were the versions that I used right until the end.
I'm leaving orginal post below as it was. Some useful info should still be there... probably. Even if pictures are gone. Maybe I'll get around to fix it all proper some day, but... don't bet on that
I've included in attachments a small pack file that makes part of battle HUD invisible. It doesn't do much good anyway, except for blocking the view. I think once you get rid of it, you won't miss it.
Here's a in-game screenshot with coloured icons and Battle HUD background removed:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Invisible UI
Installation:
All packs are in Movie format, so simply Unzip file into your Shogun2/Data folder.
I hope some of you will enjoy it.
And please, let me know what you think.

Reason: update
I like your variant, BullGod. I don't like the versions which recolour the background of the unit cards too strongly, as it distracts from the rest of the battle view looking more subdued and natural. The "childish" style of your figures also appear more fitting this era, as if someone from the Sengoku period with simple tools tried to illustrate the different types of troops in his or her country. Will test it in game.

GNOTHI SEAUTON (Know Thyself) - precept inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, Greece MEDEN AGAN (Nothing To Excess) - another precept inscribed in the aforementioned place
These are great. Nice original art style and subtly colored backgrounds (I agree with Demokritos, other alternatives are too distracting). Definitely putting these in for the next game.
I would love to use this once you're done with it.
I do wish you can make a version with some subtle color in the background to distinguish the unit types.
This helps finding the unit types faster during battle.
Very nice work ! Those really look great m8. Might I suggest you put some background color or symbol for the specific units so you can easily identify whats what at first glance ?
I'm really glad you all liked it.
I've updated the pack file, more units got their icons. Only Siege and hero units are left. Uh, and warrior nuns.
I'll try making a background colour verison, when all is finished.
Re: BullGod's Unit Icons Mod + Invisible Battle HUD
Full vanilla rooster completed.
As for AUM,S2Realism, or other mods I'll try to make icons for them in time.
They're not priority right now, as I'm not playing with them at the moment.
Re: BullGod's Unit Icons Mod + Invisible Battle HUD
I just realised yesterday, that unfortunately I forgot about Ikko-Ikki unit icons from the first patch (various monk and ashigaru units of that faction). Problem has been mended, downloads replaced. Icons are the same as their generic counterparts. Whoever is using my mod, please just download again and replace the file. Sorry about the confusion.

Most of them. Naginata Hero, and Bow Hero are simply cut out from some japanese pictures (I couldn't find anything that useful for the rest of hero units, while I wanted them to stand out from the rest -and I'm afraid Yari Hero fails a little in that aspect).
At first I didn't planned to, but now I'm thinking of making naval unit icons too.
I've made Kobaya ships and Medium Bune so far:
