Default How can I get peace with Seulucids and Ptolemaics?

I'm playing as the greek city states, and after uniting Greece I conquered most of asia minor, including the islands below it and the strategically important city of Antioch with the help of my ally Pontus and in the process I pissed off the Seulucid Empire and Egypt. When I took Antioch I found myself bottlenecked by Egyptians and Seulucids and they've been throwing their lives away in and around the city walls for many years by now. While at war with eachother. They've been getting the worst of the fighting, but I want peace because the war is such a huge drain on my economy and reinforcing my armies with greek elites from the mainland is difficult because the Ptolemaic navy keeps harrassing - sometimes succesfully - my troop shipments.

Unfortunately, despite how it would be in their best intrest, they both keep stubbornly declining my offers for peace. So, any hints on how to get peace with them? If it's not possible, is there some sort of a cheat I could do to get peace?

You could try forced diplomacy - I can't remember exactly how that works but have a search on this forum.

Otherwise, you'll just have to conquer them.

Forced diplomacy would definitely work, but my guess is that the AI would just come after you again after a year or two. If you've got borders with an AI faction, they will probably declare war on you unless you are stronger than they are _and_ keep an army on the border. Even then, they may. The AI is extremely aggressive, to the point of suicidal. As long as there's a land border, they're going to keep coming after you in all likelihood.

What campaign difficulty are you on?

I have no problem with keeping a large army in the city and I'm definately stronger than they are because I'm the strongest faction in every aspect (except financial and production) in my campaign, so I think I might try force diplomacy if nothing else works out. Oh, and my campaign difficulty is M/M

Exterminating the population and then gifting Antioch to Pontus/Armenia would be one way of acquiring a peace between the two. You have to be careful not to bottleneck Pontus/Armenia otherwise they'll turn on you instead and once you've dealt with them, the Ptollies and Seleucids will attack again should you share border regions. Careful management of borders is how it works.

Giving Antioch to Pontus or Armenia won't work, not only because that city is quite important to me, but also because I've started conquering lands from Pontus to fund my war with Seulucids and Ptolemaics and I think Armenia is about to be destroyed Seulucids.

Only M/M? Then again, those two factions are some of the wealthiest.

I think you may have slightly misunderstood me. A large army in a city won't deter factions that are already at war with you. They hate you anyway. The large army (and navy) on the border will deter factions near you but that aren't yet at war with you. Small tribute payments also help.

No, I didn't misunderstand you, I knew you meant that I'd have to have peace with them. Anyway, I'm currently having fun with a Roman campaign, (Gauls are outrageously underpowered, btw) but when I feel like continuing the Greek campaign, I'm gonna do the force diplomacy thing, so I guess this problem is solved.

O.K., I'm glad you're enjoying the Roman campaign. I think Carados's balancing changes in 4.0 have fixed the Gauls, but we'll find out more once we're in beta.

Only M/M? I thought this was the ideal setting. I dropped down from VH/VH to avoid the ludicrous damage done by missile weapons, primarily javelins. And the damage done now seems more reasonable.

But I thought the settings only effect morale, weapons damage and money for the AI? Not diplomacy.

I actually only have the battles set to M. The campaign is VH.

The higher the difficulty the more the AI hates you. At least that's what I remember.
