I am no expert but that horse seems rather large for a mongolian horse as well.

No one ever said steppe ponies were pretty. As far as horses go, the ones the Mongols rode would probably be considered among the ugliest in the world when paired up against the ones the Europeans had. The thing about the steppe ponies though, their endurance was VASTLY superior to that of the horses bred in Europe and the middle east.

Some tribes did. Southern Mongols along the fringes of the Gobi certainly did. The Merkits who lived up by Lake Baikal rode Reindeer themselves at times. The Mongols were and are to this day a hardy people. You use what you can to survive on the steppes.

Wow. Nice information, I didn't know that Merkits rode Reindeer. I didn't even know that were Merkit people. Thanks a lot.

The Mongols were comprised of a wide array of clans, ranging from the Merkits, Ongirrats, Olkunuts, Tartars, Naimans, Jadarans, Taichiud, Keraits and the Borjigins >Genghis Khan's clan< and many more. I'm probably mispelling alot of those names but meh, you get the idea. Many of the clans were broken up and spread among others, creating the basis for a single Mongol people. Only a few of the tribes were allowed to remain largely intact, those were the ones that had first rallied to Genghis Khan before he unified them all.

If you want to know what contemporary traditional Mongols look like, watch BBC's "Human Planet", I believe the Gras Lands episode. Damn impressive.
