    Default Install trouble

    Hi all,

Loved RS1 and am trying to get RS2 to work. As with any of the mods I try.... I can't seem to get it to run. I installed RTW-BI up to v1.6 and then followed the instructions(nicely done btw) to the letter. I was confident, for once I understood what and how to install the game and I was ready to go. I choose my faction, hit play... and wouldn't ya know it I get an error.

    1) It's saying I don't have it installed into the correct folder. I however, know that I did in fact install it into my rtw folder.

    2) Engine: Rometw-bi.exe faction campaign: -mod: play_sparta

    3) in total: rometw-bi.exe-mod:play_sparta -show err

I'm still running windows xp and when I got to the rtw folder it still only shows my original installed files... none of the new ones shown on the install thread. Also it looks like I actually lost some things like the descr_unit and such. There's gaps in the data folder. Like I said I know I'm installing it into the correct destination but it's not putting the folders in there.

I would like to say I'm surprised it didn't work for me... but with my track record at this, it isn't the least surprising Thanks for any help!

edit: Oh also I did miss one thing on the install page. I forgot to disable my virus protection and my setup was missing it's exe when I tried to install it originally. I went ahead and added it manually and tried again with the same result. Did that ruin it from the start or would that be corrected once dummy me remembered to add the exe to it?

The setup file is important. It should already have the correct extension on the file. By adding it you may have made RSII_setup.exe into RSII_setup.exe.exe which may or may not have some interesting effects.

One thing that I've always done is to go into the 'Folder Options' and ensure that all file extensions are shown. I know in Windows 7 you can hide extensions of known file types but for me perosnally it can mean you end ep adding a second extension to the file.

If after the install your folder does not look like the one in the install thread then something has gone wrong. When you run the installer you need to point it to the 'game folder' and not the 'data' folder. The 'game folder' is the one where the exe are.

So using the pictures from the install thread the 'game folder' is "C:\SKN Program Files\The Creative Assembly\RSII_Public". This is what it looks like prior to running the install:

Once the install has run then the folder looks like:

These files must be somewhere on your PC. Quite often people will install to the 'data' folder ("C:\SKN Program Files\The Creative Assembly\RSII_Public\data") and this is not where to point the installer to.

So, I'd first make sure that you have the correct set of files for the installer.

Thanks for the reply! I did double check to make sure it was going to the rtw folder and not into the data. I only mentioned the data folder because I thought it was odd that some files in that folder had disappeared after trying to install rs2

As for the exe file... I noticed in the installation instructions to make sure the rs2_setup read exe after it as some visus protectors will take the exe away. Of coarse mine did and I only noticed that after I had tried to install it just as rs2_setup as the icon.

Long story short, I'm gonna delete it all and try again... hopefully minus the mistakes. I'll let you know how it turns out

OK, got it running! I'm not sure if this is due to using windows XP or what but when choosing my destination folder during set up I had to back all the way out of activision; to my program files screen. Then reenter into activision and choose my copied rtw folder I made for RS2. Just a heads up if you get any more problems for those of us stuck in the XP stone age.

Good to hear that it's working.

    Enjoy the mod.
