Default Computer busted, crashing on the laptop

Well, my computer finally kicked the bucket. The problem was in the motherboard and since all components were specific to it, I might not find a suitable replacement.

Anyway, I put EB on my new laptop, hoping to get it running. The game works fine and I played a custom battle to see how it handles the tactical map. Then I started a campaign with Koinon and I got a crash the moment I tried to enter the first battle.

My laptop has an i7 processor, Radeon HD 6370M 1GB graphic card, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 system. I made sure that RTW (and BI and Alex) and EB 1.2 went to the same folder in my Users folder instead of the Program Files. I installed all the missing sprites and those fixes. I installed Forced Diplomacy minimod, Phalanx mod and gave the AI a list of conquering targets. Basically it's the exact same configuration as on my busted computer with the exception of the Phalanx mod. EB worked perfectly on my computer. I don't remember the last time I had a crash on that thing.

Anyway, EB wil crash as soon as the game zooms in on the place of battle, right before it begins to load the tactical map.

Correction: at the end of a historical battle the game will also crash.

Did you try to revert to EB without mini-mods?

Should I uninstall the entire EB mod and reinstall it from the beginning? Or is uninstalling the minimods enough?

I noticed that Vanilla RTW didn't work on my (now busted) computer. Does this mean EB changes Vanilla folders? Tat would mean I need to reinstall the whole game.

I also remember futilely trying out my old savegames on the new laptop. Is there any chance that these would work if I make the exact same mod configuration? Or is the laptop (Windows 7) so different from my computer (XP)?

Would be easier in the long run to just uninstall all of it and reinstall.

EB does not change Vanilla, maybe one of your minimods does.
Try to uninstall them one by one, or, if the original EB files got overwritten, install new.

If Vanilla doesn't work install completely from scratch.

I've decided to reinstall the entire RTW folder. I followed the instructions on this forum to the letter:

    1. uninstall RTW and all components
    (1.5: restart laptop)
    2. install RTW
    3. install BI
    5. install AL
    6. backup RTW (duplicate folder)
    7. check version (1.5)
    8. install EB 1.1 (C:\Users\Martin\Activision\Rome - Total War), Trivial Script, EB Recruitment Viewer, Units Documentation
    9. install EB 1.2 (same directory as 1.1)
    10. install all three fixes (sprites, general, script)

So far I didn't install Forced Diplomacy mod. I will start a campaign and see if I get those same errors. If not, I will install the Forced Diplomacy and AI win conditions.

You should get no errors with that configuration.
Maybe some of your used minimods aren't compatible to each other.

So far so good. No problems yet. I started a Koinon campaign and I'm about to attack Korinth.

The mods I used before (when the game crashed) are in Vartan's compilation pack. So far I haven't heard of anyone having problems with that compilation. It's basically a combination of Alex Engine mod, the 1.2 fixes, Forced Diplomacy, Naval StratMap mod (new textures for ships), phalanx mod, quotes update and Remove Giant Trees.

I've given the AI the win conditions because their conquest is more directional (at least I think so).

I've also tinkered with the export_descr_unit file but nothing drastic. I've given greater range to Indian longbowmen, returned the Goidilic units etc.

Maybe your own modding of the edu was the reason, Vartan's pack runs smoothly.
Anyway, good to hear that you can go on with your campaign!

I took Korinth. The battle went smoothly. Another short battle the next turn, also without problems. I will keep playing the Greek campaign as it is, then I will try using the old save games. I used only Win Conditions and Forced Diplomacy with some so that shouldn't be a problem.
